I come from a society where social norms are the order of the day. Rules must be must be followed to the letter. Role and duties are divided and stipulated based gender. In this era where civilization has taken over, one could expect certain traditional stereotypes like man should not do certain work because it too feminism or work for women should not be too masculine in nature to be a long gone issue, but to my amusement, such practices is still intact even today. This brings in the question of gender inequality in the society we live in today. One thing that captured my attention is the gender inequality in the education sector. There is a lot of inequality in this sector despite being the key mechanism of enlightening people. I am a victim of this gender inequality based on education system and in this paper I am going to demonstrate how in the system of education there is great influx of inequality basing on my own experience.
Hospitality has been my career dream, I worked hard to ensure that I could do a course on hospitality in the university and eventually I managed to score good grades in my high school exam. My family was so impressed by my performance. “This is now my real son; you must be an engineer just like me”. Those were the words of my father. I was not impressed and I decide to tell him that I would like to be a cateress since hospitality was my career dream. Have never seen my father turn furious before like when he heard that. “You are a man, hospitality is a course specifically for women, and you must be an engineer. What a sexist language and tone? He made his word and when he does so he means it. My mother tried to intervene but all was in vein, he could hear not another word of hospitality for to him that was for women, I had nothing else to do but to obey my fathers’ advice to become an engineer since I am a man and hospitality belongs to women. To date I am pursing a degree in mechanical engineering but am worried I might make a poor engineer not because I like it but because my father sees the course I like as womanish. Now the question that is troubling my mind and I have been asking myself severally is? Is there a course of a subject for male and for female in education sector? The answer is no. Therefore the answers to gender inequalities we are experiencing today are from our actions we take in handling issues.
For instance in the education system we find a lot of engineers, drivers, pilots, surveyors’ and other science oriented job being dominated by one male gender. On the other hand the humanities oriented jobs for example catering, nursing, tailoring, receptionist just to mention but few is dominated majorly by female gender.
This reflects to my scenario and I feel am accountable for reproduction of gender inequality in the society. The action I took by abiding to my fathers’ advice to take an engineering course and leave hospitality since he believed that it is for women clearly shows that I agree with the fact that hospitality is for women and engineering is meant for men. Antifeminism is direct opposition to feminism. It sets out clearly hear where we are opposed to women equality me included. The fact that I could not follow my heart but followed my egoism when choosing the course clearly propagated continuity of inequality where certain courses are seen as feminist. Antifeminism in the sector of educations sets believe that science courses are for men and humanity subjects are for women. Michael Kimmel in his book The Gendered Society captures a clear reproduction of gender inequality in the education sector where Barbie's first words were, "Math class is tough.” this believe shows that math is therefore meant for men and should remain that way. This proves the same case I underwent when choosing my course.
Another thing still in this field of education that captured my attention is the emphasis on educating the boy child more than the girl child in many societies especially in developing countries. This creates a lot of gender inequality and education has failed to address it. If the society like the one I find myself in believes that engineering course is for men, is that not creating and diversified gender inequality? The term liberal socialism radical feminism seems to be taking its course despite sharp criticism it is facing. This is where the society has values that devalue the morality of women in the society. According to feminist ethics, women are seen as less rational hence should source ideas just from men. The same case is seen or explicit itself in the education system where certain subjects are seen as less import than the other. According to the event I went through where engineering is seen more important than hospitality, the actions I chose to take despite my will therefore encourages oppression of equality.
De-gendering is a term that has been used most of the time to address inequality in the society. It is the act of making certain situations of gender oppressions neutral and balance in the society. The society is never neutral. It is characterized by inequalities even in the education whose sole aim is to create a balanced environment where both sexes compete on a daily basis and it is the education system to gauge the best. That is not the case here. The system has categorized subjects into two major such that there is the field of science which seem to be meant for male gender and the field of humanities which seem to be meant for female gender. In my case, my father did oppose my idea of doing hospitality not because he wanted but because of the existing forces in the society. Not challenging my father’s decisions proves resistance to de-gendering.
With education, one can challenge the whole world. To address any kind of oppression, emphasis must be placed on education. The social changes we experienced today like resistance to inequalities is addressed in the education system. When we find conflicting situations which seems to be propagated by education there is a big reason to worry. For instance the situation I encountered with my father is a clear sense that there is important course than the other and when you do certain courses you are devalued for instance man doing receptionist work his manhood is lowered. This should no be the case. It is therefore the education system to set clear objective towards addressing gender imbalance and ensure equity between both genders in the society.
