Answer:
Explain the term Green Revolution:
Humans have experienced numerous revolutions that changed the way they live. Examples of such revolutions include the Industrial Revolution, American Revolution, and Green Revolution. The Green Revolution is a term that is widely used in reference to a set of developments, research, and initiatives of transferring technology which began in 1920s and went on to the late 1960s (Glaeser, 2013). It resulted in an increase in global agricultural production, especially in the developing world.
Intended Outcomes
The Green Revolution was widely characterized by a substantial increase in the global agricultural productivity due to technological advancements. Research suggests that it is a period when new synthetic herbicides, chemical fertilizers, and pesticides were developed (Glaeser, 2013). Specifically, the fertilizers helped in increasing yields by supplying crops with more nutrients. On the other hand, the pesticides and herbicides helped in controlling weeds, killing or deterring insects, preventing diseases, and leading to higher productivity.
High-yield crops were also developed during the green revolution. Such crops were largely designed to increase crop yields. Farming methods, such as multiple cropping, were also introduced and they played a crucial role in improving the yields. Many farmers across the globe use the advancements in agricultural technology as well as new farming techniques to improve their yields.
Unintended Outcomes:
The use of synthetic and herbicides as well the use of chemical fertilizers had an adverse impact on the environment because they increased the levels of pollution (Glaeser, 2013). They polluted the water systems and the soil in the fields where they were used. Due to the pollution of water and the environment downstream, many people were exposed to the toxic chemicals that farmers were using in their farms.
Large irrigation systems that were implemented during the Green Revolution exerted pressure on the water reserves and some cases led to droughts and water shortages.
