Good Essay On How Technology Evolves

The speech I would like to analyze was done by Kevin Kelly, on the topic “How technology evolves”. It was a TED talk in Monterey, California in February of 2005.
Kevin Kelly is a co-founder of the Wired magazine. He used to be an editor/publisher at the Whole Earth Review. Kevin is a technology enthusiast, who wants to spend all of his money on new technology on one hand, and a person, who wants to sell all of his technology, except for the bicycle, on the other. Kevin Kelly went to the University of Rhode Island. As for his career, he has been working in a number of magazines and journals, and is a published author.
In his speech Kevin Kelly compares the evolution of technology to biological evolution of species. When analyzing the way technology developed over time, Kelly came to a conclusion that technology acts in a certain way, which is very similar to biology in its values and goals. It is striving for ubiquity, complexity, diversity, etc. In his opinion, unlike biological species, technology doesn’t die out; it evolves, and rewards the ones who evolve.
Kevin Kelly suggests that technology, taken in its current state, could be considered as a 7th kingdom of life. He argues, that nowadays, technology is less dependant on humans that it used to be, we have machines making machines, which, in their turn, keep evolving. Kevin Kelly also believes, technology is playing the ultimate never ending game, the point of which is to evolve to keep playing, rather then to just win.
I think, that not yet on it’s own, but technology does evolve, and much like the biological species it adapts. Animals adapt to new habitats, they develop resistance to pollutants and poisons, they evolve into more complex organisms over time. Technology does the same, it evolves into more complex things, it adapts to the needs of the users of technology, it adapts to the times and the dynamics of the world we live in. Thus, to conclude, I would like to agree with Kevin Kelly, that there is a parallel that can be drawn between biological and technological evolution.
