Experiences make life enjoyable as people seek to understand different moments. There are experiences that will leave an individual happy while others are moments to break him or her. However, all are experiences despite the impact. Each person has a story about life experience whether bad or good. I will never forget of the life threatening experience in the hands of a nurse in 2010. The moment remains horrible to me as I never thought my life could be at risk in the hands of a medic.
One day, I woke up with extensive pain in my stomach. The experience was one of the worst stomachaches I have ever experienced. The pain was extremely sharp, and I had to seek medical attention. I was aware that I was expectant, and delivery time was not due, so I had to take every caution. I was worried of the kid in my womb since the pain was premature.
I went to Baton Rouge General to seek the treatment that I desperately needed. I trusted the services of the hospital making me choose it in place of any other healthcare center. When my turn to see the nurse came, I was lucky to meet Nurse Julie, who looked welcoming and professional. I never doubted that the pain will not cease. I was still convinced that the pain had nothing to do with my pregnancy.
I had to narrate my case to Nurse Julie, who keenly analyzed the information to assist her in diagnosing my problem. Shock hit me when her first question was “are you expectant?” I immediately I knew something was wrong with my pregnancy. She took me through some pregnancy evaluation tests, which indicated that I had an ectopic pregnancy. It was the cause of the exclusive pain in my stomach since the embryo could not develop outside the uterine cavity.
Nurse Julie sympathized with me as she suggested the only solution as the termination of the pregnancy through operation. She advised me that if the embryo were not removed I would also be at risk. I agreed to undergo an operation to eliminate the risk. I was convinced the operation would go on accordingly, and I was not in any risk.
However, my expectations turned opposite when I woke up from the surgery. I could not believe I had another complication in the hands of the medics. My hand was swollen, and I had to seek confirmation from the nurse on what was the problem. The nurse informed me that during the surgery I had a needle stick injury that had caused a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).
The DVT condition causes formation of a blood clot within a deep vein (Mayo Clinic 01). It had happened in my hand and seemed extensively risky to my health. I was in deep pain having lost my pregnancy, and now I have to remain in hospital for further treatment. The clot was moving towards the heart where it could have caused massive damage. Therefore, the doctors suggested that I should go back to the theater so that the clot may be removed to avoid its death effect when it gets into the heart. For close attention by a doctor, I had to be in the hospital for an extra month.
The moment still lingers in my mind, and I cannot fully comprehend the pain. It was a risky moment for me. The pregnancy could have cost my life following the complications. It became worse when the doctors whom I trusted to treat me exposed me to more risk where death was the only option. However, I was able to overcome all and I am celebrating my life.
