I have learned that global identities and interactions are brought about by different factors. Human beings have continuously interacted since time immemorial. Cultural identities have formed part of the aspects that lead to global identities. As people continue communicating, the world is becoming a small village. The technological advancement has resulted in globalization. People can now easily move from place to place and get ideas and knowledge within a twinkle of an eye. However, as we have been taught about cultural identities, some people misuse this aspect to undermine other parties. My identity is thus based on the cultural identities. The elements that can make me identify my personality include the gender, language, and race, and religion, geographical and even nationality. With globalization, my identity should not be overwhelmed by the global village. Identity is based on the group that I belong and the religion which binds me to the other members who belong to my same identity. My discourse community also assists me in identifying where I belong. The aspects that can be used to trace my identity are enormous and may include the following:
Globalization is the universal integration which arises from the transaction of world ideas, products, and other aspects of human culture. Some of the major factors in globalization include the advancement of telecommunication infrastructure and transportation. The factors include the rise of internet and telegram. These factors have generated cultural and economic interdependence.
Many scholars trace the origin of globalization to the current and modern times. Others trace and associate globalization’s origin before the discovery of European Age as well as the new world journey. Furthermore, others discover the globalization history to the Third Millennium BCE. There was a quick growth in the world’s culture and economies in the 20th century. It is, therefore, evident that the word globalization has been used since time immemorial. Its use is traced back to the mid-1980s and early 1990s. In the year 2000, four aspects of globalization were recognized by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The fundamental elements include the capital and investment, trade and transaction, migration and movement of people and even the dissemination of knowledge. These aspects are geared towards enhancing globalization. Apparently, the aspects are the core pillars of globalization. Other linkages of globalization include the climatic challenges such as the cross-boundary water, air pollution, ocean overfishing and even the climate change. Globalization process can either be affected or affect the work, business organizations, socio-cultural resources, natural environment and the economics.
The assumption of globalization issue is that people have been interacting over an extended period. Globalization did not germinate recently, but it has been a historical problem which is used in identity. Advancement of globalization only happened in the recent past. A good example which evidences the historical trace and origin of globalization is the Silk Road, which connected Africa, Asia, and Europe. It is a good example which validates the transformative power showing Trans local exchange. The exchange existed in the past. As nations share ideas and products, religion, language, the arts and other aspects of culture also mixed and spread.
The motivation of the view of globalization is those goods, ideas, and services spread among many nations of the world. After Europeans discovered and explored the oceans that included translatic travel, more discoveries then followed. These findings strengthen the globalization as more goods, and ideas and services could easily traverse into different countries.
The narratives such as the discovery of travel, the historical exchange of ideas, steamship and rail road’s influenced globalization issues. Telecommunication and transportation shorten time and brought space near. This allowed for increasingly rapid exchange of ideas, goods, and culture. In the 20th-century advancement in intermodal transport, road vehicles and airlines made the globe into a village. Traveling can now be made easier. Electronic communication and improvement of ICT has made communication easier. In the wake of 2010, the emergence of advanced mobile phones and internet lead to connection of millions of people globally. Although, globalization has been perfected recently, its origin is traced back to the time immemorial.
Cultural identity is the feeling or identity of belonging to, as one of the self-perception and self- conception of ethnicity, nationality, religion, generation, social class, locality and any other social group which have a renowned and distinct value. Cultural identity is associated with an individual and identical group whose members share the same culture. Several researches have been carried out to show that social theories depicting cultural identity. Recently a new kind of identity has been presented. This new form disrupts the individuals understanding into various cultural identities. The different cultural identities may be as a result of religious beliefs, race, food, language, history, gender, sexuality, nationality, and even esthetics.
The cultural divisions can be precise and acceptable in different parts of the world. It comes when there is diverse ethnic population, and the social unity is primarily based on beliefs and values. Culture is an essential aspect as it shapes the identity. A cosmopolitan society gives members of the community a superior sense of citizenship that is actively shared. The cultural identity is based on the assumption that the culture of different people leads to various cultural identities. It is also grounded on the hypothesis that cultural identity is a historical aspect used to identify different people and their culture. The assumption takes into account the importance of culture and beliefs. However, an individual’s cultural identity should not be used to undermine the right of a person. Different narratives that explain the cultural diversity and races undermine the view. The theories explaining the origin of culture and races sometimes misrepresent the information. This information can be used to underrate some members of society. These cultural identities have led to globalization. People used different languages to communicate. The languages used in several parts of the world bind the people living in those regions.
My identity is based on the cultural identity. After identifying my culture, my religion, and even the gender, I can now easily define my identity. My education does not influence my identity. The education is used to increase the knowledge but not an aspect of identity. However, in the scholar’s world the discourse community can assist in identifying one's identity. The heredity also identifies my identity. Identity can be traced by use of an individual’s genetic composition. Parents influence the identity of individual’s as different individuals’ ties their identity to their parents. Thus, hybridity is the process that involves a combination of two different elements. These elements trace an individual’s identity. However, factors such as the political arena influence an identity. My identity may be influenced by the politics in the country. Such theories such cultural diversity theories are used as a baseline for cultural identities. Globalization and the emerging technology can influence the identity.
