Research indicates that there is a considerable theory-practice gap in the nursing field. The theory-practice gap refers to the mismatch between theoretical nursing that is taught in a class and practical nursing as it is applied in a working environment. It is a global dilemma that every nation tries to deal with in a different manner (Butts, 2011). The theory-practice gap emanated from the hypothesis of applying basic nursing theory in direct practice. I firmly believe that the theory-practice gap has stopped nursing professionals from utilising their knowledge base fully in the practical settings, and it has also compromised the theoretical element of nursing.
The theory-practice gap can lead to numerous challenges because the basic principles of practice that are established in the curricula are not properly aligned with the operating principles in the work environment. Besides, they can affect professional competence and lead to challenges in the progression from a learner to a novice professional (Chism, 2011). Theory practice gaps also lead to disillusionment as some nurses realise that they cannot apply the nursing principles and concepts in the practical settings; therefore, they end up considering the option of leaving the profession altogether (Butts, 2011).
Moreover, the theory-practice gap prevents nurses from recognising and understanding the significance of theory in practice. Therefore, the nurses gradually lose confidence in their knowledge and capabilities. As a result, they are caught between focussing on the patients’ needs and their individual needs (Chism, 2011).
Conclusively, the disparity between nursing theory and practice may have far-reaching repercussions for both the present and future of the profession, especially in regards to job satisfaction, morale, and retention. As a result, bridging the gap between theory and practice will play a crucial and critical role in improving learning for students and working conditions for nurses.
