I went to a soccer game last week. It was between two major soccer league teams and the crowd was intense. The moment I got in, I began witnessing extensive crowd gathering in their places right from the very beginning. What is more surprising is the fact that the match still had half an hour to begin and the place was jamming up pretty quickly. Moreover, I saw couples flirting with one another while some kids were ecstatic as if they had come to their first live game. It was a joy to watch how the kids were hanging on their seats, patiently but with a slight look of agitation as if they were getting annoyed by the wait they had to achieve in order to watch the game kick off. The couples that were flirting continued to do so. It was as if they had no interest in the game but were only here for a recreational joy ride, trying to do something different with their lives rather than participating in the game at all. It wouldn’t have surprised me if these teenage couples were asked which team they were supporting and they weren’t able to name a team, let alone pick a side in the team. It was sad and hilarious at the same time but I guess that is how life is nowadays.
Moreover, I saw how frantically the kids were wandering now. They were out of their seats and roam back and forth in their rows, probably to keep themselves busy and away from boredom and melancholy that persisted within the stadium in the initial stages. I also spotted aged people, in their fifties, if I guessed it right. They were just sitting and looked the most ludicrous of supporters out in the stadium. It made sense too. Soccer is an old game after all and it would be a shame to see youngsters and o old followers of the game take up place within the stadium. 15 minutes for the game to begin and I could feel the humidity in the air.
During the game, the rapture and noise was immense and people were finding their own ways of enjoying and passing time before the game had begun. It was like a training exercise where everyone had one significant role to play and they were playing it like they owned their role. It was like everyone was trained for this kind f event and everyone knew what to do at a specific time. The couples were the ones I had my eye on the most. I wanted to observe them and figure out why they really were here. I mean, if all they wanted to do was try something new while they flirted, they could have gone to any other sport with a cheaper ticket. Why come all the way to a major league soccer game that costs 40 dollars a seat?
Anyways, like I said, I knew they had their purpose as well so I kept looking in on them from time to time to spot any difference or real perception of what they wanted to do when the game actually begin. The old aged supporters were sitting comfortably as if they were in their own home’s lounge in front of a giant plasma TV and watching the game like an obnoxious supporter, nothing disturbing them in the stadium whatsoever. They were calm, resilient and did not seem to be getting annoyed by the people who were shouting behind them or the kids that were running in their row. On my side of the stadium, I saw middle aged families sitting and anticipating the game eagerly as time for kick off came nearer and nearer with every passing minute.
Finally, the players came out and sang their anthems before the team to kick off the game went to the middle of the field. The players looked steady and calm but the crowd was nervous now. It was like everything had changed and a new dilemma had been fixed into place with everyone aware of the consequences that this dilemma carried along with it. No one was flirting anymore, not even the couples who had been flirting for half an hour. They were clueless, with poker faces staring right down the field. The kids were back in place and the middle aged families were quiet and looking eagerly at their watch. As soon as the kick off was heard and the game commenced, the noise began and it was thunderous. The crowd was frantic right from the very beginning of the match and every time a team member from one of the two football teams kicked a ball, dribbled the ball, ran with it or passed it to another team member, their supporters would scream and encourage the team with every passing second. What is more surprising is the fact that the crowd wouldn’t stop their noises and kept on going for the entire first forty five minutes. It was ecstatic. Anybody would have begun to get carried away with the rhythm of the crowd and I, too, was screaming, yelling and supporting a team that I had sided with from the beginning of the match. The crowd did boo a little and send echoes of distrust and loss in faith when the half time arrived and the score sheet said nil and nil on both teams’ side. The supporters seemed aggravated and annoyed as well as angry at seeing the math be so thrilling but without any goals to deliver. I was dismayed myself and couldn’t resist to watch the crowd when a goal was struck. At least, I wanted to see the supporters’ reaction on both sides of the teams. The fifteen minutes of half time were crazy and almost didn’t exist. It felt like a minute when the fifteen minutes were over and during these fifteen minutes, the crowd was dead silent with no noise erupting from either end of the stadium.
The teams got out of their dug outs shortly and they seemed more energetic in comparison to their entrance of the stadium before the entire game had begun. They quickly started the game and it was as if the crowd has some kind of connection with the team. As soon as the ball was kicked, the crowd, without any hesitation, went into uproars and frenzies. Everyone had forgotten their place and people were spinning shirts in their hands, raising banners, cheering their own supported team to score and then it happened. The first goal of the game came from a corner kick. It happened in a flash but the noise it generated lasted for eternity. The crowd wouldn’t stop cheering on the team’s side that had scored. N the other side of the stadium, the team that had taken that goal had supporters which were stunned to the core. Shocked in awe, this side of the crowd seemed dismayed. No supporting, no jeering, only mere silence. I spotted a few kids that were either crying from emotion or had tears in their eyes. Even the old aged folk on the apparent losing side’s crowd were emotionally destabilised. Suddenly, the entire momentum of the game and rapture of the entire stadium had been fixated onto one side while the other side seemed shattered and dead. Then came two more goals from the side that was losing and this time, their crowd got up from the seats, ran around, jumped like crazy and screamed in happiness while the other side that had opened the scoring had their crowd in disappointment. I was astonished at how quickly the reactions and emotions of people were changing in their gestures and their body language. It was fun to watch.
After the final whistle was blown and the losing team won with a two goal comeback, the crowds merged as one and I saw supporters from both sides shaking hands, kids running around their parents as they headed for the exit while couples remained like couples and began flirting yet again, even the ones that were on the losing side. I concluded from this that no matter how intense crowds may get during a soccer game, they remain neutral in their feelings after the game is over. At least, a majority of the crowd remains neutral while notorious people exist in every sport, yet even they can’t cause much trouble as was the matter of fact in this game that I witnessed.
