1. As poverty and education have a two-way direction relationship, improvement in the education sector can have a positive effect on the reduction of poverty.
a. Most people agree that
i. “Increase in the rate of poverty could result to poor educational attainment of people since people living below or near the poverty threshold could not afford adequate education (Krueger & Lindahl 1102).
a. However, it is a fact that people with poor education are constrained to live close or below poverty line due to obvious lack of options and opportunities for better employment.
b. “One of the main problems of the United States is the increasing rate of poverty and its influence on education” (Psacharopoulos & Patrinos 113).
c. The U.S. government spends huge amounts of federal funds to make education accessible for everyone but this still cannot prevent the problem of increasing poverty rate.
ii. Special methods should be considered that will allow improvement of the educational attainment of students such as special education interventions and increase in funds directed to education.
b. The concept of poverty is one of the most complicated among all economic categories and the lack of education can also be viewed as a type of poverty.
i. “People with higher educational attainments are considered to be more productive economically which results to higher earnings” (Berg 5).
ii. “Education is also viewed as a tool to combat several social and economic issues” (Berg 5).
c. Therefore, improvement of the education system and education attainment does not only influence poverty rate in a positive way, but also increases the standards of living by promoting social development.
2. Poverty has a significant influence on both educational outcomes of students and their ability to learn.
a. Educational outcomes of students depend mostly on the conditions that they have, for example parental influence, financial resources, nutrition, health and home background.
i. “Some of the students are held back on their education due to lack of financial resources or due to the lack of parental influence” (Berg 9).
ii. “Some studies suggest that the influence of the social and economic status of students on the educational attainment could be reduced by improving the performance of poor students in the schools” (Krueger & Lindahl 1102).
b. Poverty hinders students’ ability to learn by putting them into conditions where they think about survival rather than intellectual development.
i. “It is known that poor nutrition and health are related to the negative impact on educational outcome” (Berg 5).
ii. “The government could consider helping students to overcome the negative impacts of low social and economic status in order to improve their ability to learn” (Krueger & Lindahl 1102).
c. Therefore, this is governmental responsibility to create such conditions at schools that would make every student equal in terms of access to education and ability to learn.
3. Such factors as poor educational enrollment and social marginalization arise as a result of poverty and have negative impact on human capital production in the country.
a. Many countries, both developed and developing, face reduction of human capital and educational enrollments due to high cost of higher education.
b. Social marginalization is another factor that affects access of youth to education.
c. In order to prevent these factors to have negative impact on the education system nationwide, the government should consider ways of combating them and promoting equal and accessible education for all.
4. Special education interventions and increase in financing education are among those methods that can contribute to lessening the impact of poverty on education.
a. Special education interventions are special programs that are developed in order to motivate students to continue to study and finish their education.
b. Careful and well-thought budget allocation in the education system may also have positive effect on the decrease of poverty and its negative impact on students.
c. Making emphasis and investing more in education may not only contribute to reducing of the poverty rate, but also bring significant positive changes in terms of economic and social conditions of living.
CONCLUSION
1. Poverty and education are extremely related: the lower is educational attainment; the higher is the poverty rate. Therefore, the solution for the problem should be complex including prompt actions against social marginalization, limited access to education, and unequal conditions for poor and middle-class students.
2. However, solving the problem of education is easier that combating poverty, that is why the government has more chances to succeed in this battle. Moreover, there are specific tools such as interventions and additional funds that can improve the situation with education.
3. The main idea is to channel more resources and to allocate them in a correct way that may stimulate interest of various groups of youth to the learning process. The education system should get enough funds and resources because it produces people who will work for the development of entire nation.
