Throughout the movie, main characters face various challenges that they have to overcome, and it required a great strength to do that. There are many characters that showed their strength in a certain way, and we will discuss some of them.
Ellen, of the main characters, was a wife of the Count Olenska, but she ran away from him to New York. In the New York of 1870s, it was a nonsense as there was a social code that imposed certain rules on marriage, and a runaway from the husband could never be approved by the society. However, Ellen showed her inner strength as she continued to behave in a way she thought was right, and she did not conform to the rules of the society. She showed her courage and strength when going against the society and against the degradation of women. Ellen went to the parties hosted not by the members of the high society and she was not supposed to do that because she was a Countess, and she became the central character of all rumors. However, it never turned her down, and she continued living her life the way she liked. I believe that going against the society requires a lot of inner strength.
Also, the novel is based on the cult of passion, and passion prevails over love and relationships. Ellen runs away from her husband because she is a passionate person and cannot live a life with someone she does not feel passionate about. Another example of passion in the movie is Newland Archer who tried to leave his wife May to be with Ellen because of his sexual attraction towards her. He even decided to leave his wife and move to Europe with Ellen, but he did not run away with her because May told him that she was pregnant. Mostly, only two characters show their passion in the film: Newland and Ellen, and the fact that Newland urged Ellen to be his mistress proves this passion to be one of the key elements of the movie.
Although the movie is a drama, it is full of violence and brutality. Violence in the movie is not related to murders or aggressive actions, but to the viciousness of New York. Social conventions in the city was a strict set of rules that dictated how to live and what to do. The movie is about the violence as an internal emotion of characters because they had to oppose so many rules that existed in the society in 1870s. Also, some of the characters had conflicting emotions, and this was also a source of internal violence.
I believe that The Age of Innocence is among the best movies of Martin Scorsese, and we can see his unique style throughout the movie. In this movie, he mixes neo-realism with hyperrealism. His neo-realism in the movie is based on different hyperbolas and a classical plot structure. He also omitted clear protagonist and antagonist demarcations, and he also used a mosaic of simulacra. Thus, I consider his style as a rather dualistic one, and it is sometimes called as a grotesque neo-realism. This is the reason why the movie was so successful, and why it is considered as one of the best of Scorsese’s films and it was nominated for so many rewards.
