Majority of classrooms and academic institutions around the world still apply face-to-face learning. This instructional approach is described as being set in the traditional classroom environment where the teacher or instructor provides theoretical frameworks through fact-to-face interactions with the students. The primary advantage of this approach is the immediate feedback made possible through instant response and reactions exchanged between the teacher-student interactions. Communication is instantaneous and simultaneous. For instance, points of discussions which are not effectively understood by the students are relayed immediately to the instructor. As such, the instructor explain and sort out causes of confusions to clarify the inquiries made in real time settings. In addition, the instructor could use different instructional materials to assist in the delivery of instruction, such as using visual illustrations, audio-visual equipment, presentations, or through traditional lectures. Another benefit of the face-to-face approach is the collaborative learning atmosphere that the presence of students create. Students with diverse backgrounds share and exchange inputs from their personal points of views. The active interplay of information create an opportunity for enhanced learning. Likewise, since students report to school for the sole purpose of pursuing academic instructions, the focus and orientation is to gain theoretical frameworks and concepts, as prescribed in the course syllabus, within the structured time frame. The disadvantages of face-to-face learning include travelling to school, allotting for time along defined schedules, and wearing the prescribed dress code or school uniform.
Concurrently, distance learning has gained popularity since the emergence of the Internet. The benefits of opting to enroll in distance education include enabling the students to learn from different geographical settings without leaving the comforts of their home or their work environments. Thus, it was observed that distance learning accords students with convenience, immediate accessibility to a wider source of information online, and avoiding incurring travel expenses. The manner of instruction relies primarily on using the online medium where messages could be exchanged between the instructor and the student; or even between and among other classmates, when required in specific course modules. On the other hand, the disadvantages of distance learning include distractions in focusing on the academic pursuit due to noise, other pressing activities, and physical presence of family members or colleagues at work. Likewise, the collaborative learning environment is absent in distance education. Distance learners have to wait for time when the instructor or other classmates could address their concerns or inquiries.
After evaluating the similarities and differences between face-to-face and distance learning, one could affirm that the best method depends on the commitment and dedication of the student to pursue their academic endeavors. Regardless of the mode of instruction, students receive similar theoretical frameworks to meet personal and professional goals. As such, both methods have advantages and disadvantages. The most important elements that should be considered is the fact that students gain knowledge and skills which are required in undertaking their profession and in making them productive citizens in the future.
