The story Thank You Ma'am by Langston Hughes is told from the third person point of view. This is a point of view where the narrator is not part of the story. This On the other hand, there are ironical instances that are used in the story. Hughes tries to bring out a picture where characteristics of characters are reversed. It is ironical that Roger, who is supposed to be a criminal is no longer a criminal in eyes of Mrs. Jones. She does not see him as a criminal but as a boy who has been neglected and therefore, a victim of circumstances. It is ironical that she dared invite a supposed thief into her house and treats him so well. She even goes on to reach into the same pocketbook and hands him a $10 bill with which to buy himself shoes.
In the story The Flowers by Alice Walker has good examples of foreshadowing. Myop’s quest for innocence is foreshadowed by the dark and unfamiliar place. She walks all ways keeping an eye on the snakes which symbolize the dangers that might come her way as she walks in the dark and gloomy place. The thoughts she harbors foreshadow the events that occur to her later. Walker uses many examples of symbolism in the story. To begin with, she chooses to use the actual summer season. These summer months are used to symbolize the innocence of the youth of Myop. Flowers too, are used as symbols of innocence of life. They are also symbols of life itself. This beauty is brought to an end by the gloomy woods and the corpse too.
