The Interview
I interviewed Jorge Tostado, the Corporate Director of Human Resources at Warwick International Hotels based in Denver Colorado. The Warwick International Hotels, established in 1980 is a leader in the industry, operating in many counties through owned branches, affiliates and managed hotels. Jorge Tostado, working as the cooperate human resource manager, is in charge of all human resource departments under the Warwick hotels. He performs a supervisory role.
Being an International business student, human resource management is one the many fields that I could specialize in. I am particularly interested in the hospitality industry which I believe offers an interesting and dynamic work environment. I felt that Mr. Tostado, being at the peak of his career at a multinational organization, would offer invaluable insights on this career path.
The challenges that come with his position are to do with the dynamic hotel industry. Trends change often which calls for adaptation while at the same time trying to maintain the organization’s culture; this means frequent training programs for staff to be at par. The other challenge is in the changing seasons in the hotel industry where the client flow peaks and drops. In some areas of operation, other dynamics, such as travel bans also affect the flow of customers, This makes it challenging to implement heir human resource strategic plan since sometimes they also need to plan the number of employees to mitigate possible loss. The industry is also changing with emerging concepts and new global market trends also require the HR Manager to be up to date. There are few high level positions in this field, making it hard for growth, but there also numerous points of entry which makes it good for those who maybe looking to change careers.
Learning about this job has encouraged me to continue pursuing my education in the same line, but to be open minded since the field may not offer many lucrative posts. I have also learnt that I will need to patient in my expectations of growth in this career since management roles do not come quick and easy. On the other hand, I have learnt that there many other jobs that I can start off from to enable me to gain the requisite experience. The interview was informative on the challenges on the job and the issues that the HR manager has to deal with every other time; I found this manageable for me. I also learned that even the human resource fields has an ever changing trend and emerging issues such as green HR which requires constant learning and strategizing.
