What it means to be American? For many centuries the United States, as the country of opportunities and freedom, has been attracting people of different races, nations and ethnic groups from all over the world. Immigrants were not only attracted by the country itself, but by a possibility to become an American, which means honour and pride. To be an American means much more than just living on the territory of the United States – it also means to have a variety of freedoms, privileges and rights.
Exactly freedom is what makes Americans special and so distinct from the rest of countries. American is given freedom in almost all areas of their lives including the freedom of press and speech, which allows them freely to express their opinions and attitude. Moreover, Americans are also given a freedom to vote and to choose their representatives and leaders. Americans are free to choose their clothing, the life style, and decide where to work and how many children to have.
Another characteristic of an American nation is equality. Equality is a very important aspect of American life because it is what Americans had been fighting for many years. Equality is a sign of a stable nation, where people are open-minded, friendly, respectful and tolerant to each other. In general people in the US are equal in terms of gender, age, sexual orientation and race. Without those people who fight for establishment of equality in the United States, America would not be such a safe environment and pleasant country to live in.
Also, being an American to live in abundance. Since American economy is one of the most stable in the world, the poverty rate is not so high in comparison with developing countries, for example. Even people, who are unemployed in the United States for different reason can count on the financial support from the government
I also believe that one of the most significant features of an American nation is patriotism. Being patriotic does not mean always support the government in its different actions on the national and international arena, but rather to care about the good of America and to do everything in order to contribute to maintaining a good life in the country that will be also available for future generations.
Of course, the United States is not a perfect country and it has many disadvantages that need to be solved. However, considering all the mentioned advantages mentioned and described above, it might be concluded that it a real privilege and proud to be an American.
