[Class Title]
1. What is the argument you will be addressing in your persuasive essay? Explain how the argument is derived from your major, the major you are considering pursuing, or your field of work.
I would like to create a persuasive essay regarding the reason why I wanted to become a nurse. I have heard many criticisms regarding the nursing profession, which I believe have discouraged many individuals from taking the nursing career path. In this paper, I outline the reasons why I choose to become a nurse despite the criticisms.
2. What are three possible key points for your selected topic? How do they support your main argument?
This paper will focus on three points. First, I would like to argue that nursing is a fulfilling profession. Second, I would like to point out that nurses are essential to the healthcare industry. And third, I would like to argue that nursing is not only a profession, but a vocation or calling. This essay that is meant to be read by a general audience, particularly those who are not very much acquainted with the nursing profession.
3. Who is the audience that will be reading your essay? What potential challenges will you have supporting your argument with this demographic?
The purpose of this persuasive essay is to inform, primarily those individuals who are wondering why there are people who would like to pursue a career in nursing despite its difficulties and challenges. The potential challenge of explaining my argument would be persuading practical students why they should pursue nursing although nursing is not easy and despite being a financially impractical profession.
4. What goal do you hope to accomplish with this essay? What will this essay need to be successful?
This essay would like to help undecided students who are at the crossroads of their college career path; those who are inclined to take the nursing profession, but are reluctant because they cannot find a deep conviction why they should pursue the nursing career path. This essay needs credible sources from nursing and healthcare experts in order to be successful.
5. Potential resources are pieces of evidence that could be used to support your argument. Provide a brief description of the sources that you used for the Annotations activity earlier in this module and explain how they will reinforce your argument.
There are four sources used in this essay. These sources were taken from organization and experts in the nursing field, which helps support the argument I have made on my essay. These are:
American Health Care Association. REPORT OF FINDINGS 2009 NURSING FACILITY STAFF RETENTION AND TURNOVER SURVEY . – This source provides a study of the nursing profession in the United States and their retention rates in healthcare institutions. It provides proof of how difficult the nursing profession is.
Carnevale, A., Smith, N., & Gulish, A. Nursing: Supply and Demand through 2020. – This source provide information regarding the future demand of nursing. This source proves that nursing is a much needed profession, especially in the future of healthcare.
Wall, B.M. History of Hospitals. n.d. – This source provide a historical background of the healthcare industry. It is used in the paper to prove that nursing emerged out of the purest intention to care and help people.
Watson, J. Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring. 2014 – This source is a modern nursing theory of care. This source is used to prove that nursing is a unique profession with ethics and mission towards society.
6. Explain how the key points of your argument align with the supporting resources you just described in Question #5.
According to a study conducted by the American Health Care Association, among the many professionals working in a hospital, the nurses, especially those who are working directly with patients, are the ones who are most likely to quit (American Health Care Association 2). But despite the difficulties and challenges, there are still others who wish to become a nurse. It should be noted that nursing is not the profession for those people who wanted to get rich. Most nurses does not earn much as they are often paid the average wage. Apparently, it is not the material benefits that encourage individuals to pursue a nursing profession, but the personal fulfillment of being able to help. It was the spirit of charity and volunteerism that established the first healthcare facilities in the world. In fact, the first hospitals in the United States developed out of almshouses that were operated by charities . Aside from the personal urge to help, I have also come to realize that every community badly needs a professional health worker, particularly nurses, for their health needs. The world today experiences a growing demand for nursing services. In the United States, scholars believe that by 2020, the country will be short of 193,000 nursing professionals (Carnevale, Smith, & Gulish 5). By taking up nursing as a career path, I am also trying to contribute in curbing the projected shortage of nurses in the future. Also, one of the most compelling reason why I choose a nursing career path is because I believe that nursing is not only an ordinary occupation, but a lifetime calling or vocation. As stated by Jean Watson, a nursing professor in the University of Colorado and the author of the Watson’s Caring Theory, nursing, as profession has its “own unique values, knowledge, and practices, and its own ethic and mission to society” .
7. Based on your argument, describe where integrating evidence would be most effective and explain why.
Basing on these three compelling arguments, the most integrating reason why I choose nursing is the belief that the nursing profession is fulfilling. Pursuing one’s happiness is the main objective of every individual even in choosing their career path. Individuals who find fulfillment in helping their fellow men may take nursing as a career because it presents an opportunity to life happy and fulfilling lives.
8. Describe a revision strategy that would be most effective in informing you while writing this essay. Why would this strategy be effective?
Revision is an important component of writing. For this paper, my revision strategy focused on making sure that the paper is in line with the purpose of why it is written. Sometimes a paper can easily get out of context or deviate from its primary objective. By remaining focused on the purpose of the paper, I would be able to limit my thoughts to what is only relevant in order to be able to revise the paper effectively.
9. How can your own writing improve from receiving feedback from an outside party? How can that feedback be integrated?
Most often, a writer needs feedback outside sources so that he will know what other people things about his work. It is way of gathering new ideas and information, which widens the writer’s perspective about his work. These feedbacks can be integrated to a writer’s own ideas in order to identify problems and opportunities for improvement.
