Language is an essential part of person’s life. It helps an individual to perceive the world and interact with other human beings. Still, it is not only the instrument, but the bearer of thousands years of human experience and wisdom. For this reason, there are words which are likely to make a strong impact over each person’s destiny and identity. I am not an exception, as once in my life I had an opportunity to experience the power of words on my own. I was sixteen, when my uncle told me: “Responsibility is accepting that you are the cause and the solution of the matter”. These wise words have truly influenced me changing the way I perceive myself and people around me, treat the events in my life and face challenges. The phrase was a turning point for me and helped me to become a mature and responsible individual, so its benefits in my life cannot be overestimated.
First of all, the words said by my uncle appeared in the right place and in the right time giving me the opportunity to reevaluate the way I behaved for years. I was a troubled teenager refusing to accept my responsibility for the things that happened to me. Most of the time, I was putting blame on external factors: parents, school, weather and bad luck. I never recognized that I am not a mere witness to what is going around me, but an active participant responsible for both causes and results of ongoing events. So I kept receiving unsatisfying marks, arguing with my relatives for no reason, lacking compassion and understanding while communicating with friends. I could not see what was wrong and I felt miserable. It seemed that everyone hated me and I was a victim to others’ cruelty and overall injustice. Such vision of the world is typical for younger individuals, but it was a high time for me to change in order to make my life more fulfilling and become involved in my destiny. I would never understand the truth if not for my uncle. He saw my struggles and approached me to talk about the way I behaved and why I felt so unsatisfied with my life. We talked for a long time and it was very engaging and life-changing conversation. Still, these were the final words which stroke me: “Responsibility is accepting that you are the cause and the solution of the matter”. Simple as that, I started understanding what I was doing wrong all the time. The uncle was really glad that I have managed to perceive his point and accept it as truth. That conversation was a crucial moment of my development and I continue feeling the benefits of its influence every day of my life.
Step by step, I started noticing that I perceived myself and the world around me in a biased way. I was always searching for some outer reasons for something to happen. Finally, I understood that these searches were no more than excuses not to accept what was truly my fault. Unsatisfying results in school were caused by my lack of attention and few efforts made to improve them; my constant quarrels with parents were the result of not accepting their point of view and rejecting their advice. Taking responsibility was a necessary step to see that I caused the majority of unpleasant experiences in my life. What is more, I also managed to understand that even if it is not entirely my fault, I can take the burden in order to become engaged in particular situation and empower myself to become a change agent. Everything that happens in my life has become the subject of my primary concern as I viewed it as a result of my actions and thoughts. My attitude towards myself has shifted greatly and so did my relationships with the others. The words taught me to be more humane, as recognizing my responsibility for troubles in life I began understanding the struggles every person faces in theirs.
Accepting responsibility also helped me to become eager to search for solutions. No longer did I have a chance to look for excuses and avoid facing challenges. When I recognized my role in every aspect of my own life, I started approaching problems proactively. Everyday struggles have become interesting experiences which I had no other choice than to tackle. Now I feel less fear of the unknown than before, and I think it is the result of my acceptance that I am the solution. No matter what happens I know that there is nobody to save me, expect for myself. The reliance on my own powers and strengths also help me to develop and grow as a healthy and mature individual who is ready to face new challenges and search for the solutions. What is more, it helped me to accept my successes as well. When I manage to achieve something, I feel that it is a result of my hard work, rather than circumstances and luck.
All in all, my uncle’s words have become the principle which I undoubtedly accept. I think it is essential for every young person to finally understand the value of responsibility and the benefits it brings. It has definitely helped me, as it improved my well-being by allowing me to act maturely and treat the others impartially and compassionately. Knowing one’s responsibility means that a person never blames and never feels neglected. I am constantly reminding myself that I am the cause and I am the solution of every matter in my life. It gives power to continue hard work no matter what happens. It leaves no room to doubts and insults. Facing challenges and solving problems is a large part of being an adult and I am extremely thankful to my uncle, as he managed to reveal a universal truth to me, which continues to guide my thoughts and deeds.
