After schooling for a long time, one anticipates to get a good job in the future. Each one has a dream job that they would prefer to work. Every place of work has a person in charge, usually called the boss. There are basically two types of bosses; a good boss and a bad boss. This paper seeks to compare and contrast between two.
A good boss focuses on the long-term results of the company. In this case, the boss does not focus on immediate results but remains focused on the future. On the contrary, a bad boss focuses on the immediate results with total disregard of the future. For example, a good boss can predict what may affect the company in the near future, while a bad one cannot. In addition, a good boss forms and champions for group success other than personal success. A good boss shall ensure that all the team players are involved in the decision making process of the company and the overall solving process. Therefore, a good boss is an excellent team player. On the other hand, a bad boss focuses on oneself with minimal involvement of the team members. Therefore, the bad boss does not perceive the other team players as important in the running of the company. From this premises, a good boss connects well with the customers, the employees, and other bosses above him. On the other hand a bad boss shall avoid connections with the employees, the customers, and the other bosses above him or her. The bad boss maintains only the essential connections.
In addition, a good boss can identify conflicts and solve them constructively with total fairness and openness. The good boss listen to all parties and advices them accordingly or applies the regulations fairly. A bad boss in most cases notices conflicts and ignores them. In the event that the bad boss does not ignore the conflicts; he or she solves them without openness and fairness. The bad boss may favor one side and ignore the other party. From the premises above, it is evidently clear that a good boss communicates clearly and describes all issues in details to avoid confusion. On the other hand, a bad boss communicates poorly and makes what was once clear, unclear in the attempt to manipulate people. For example, a bad boss may interpret the codes of contact to his favor and oppress the juniors. A Good boss ensures that the rules are applying to all and communicates such in a crystal clear manner.
A good boss tries as much as possible to coach their teams (Edward P. Lazera, Kathryn L. Shaw, and Christopher T. Stanton, 2011) while a bad boss would emphasize on the ranks. From this perspective, a good boss does not dictate but directs the workers in a well-coordinated manner. On the other hand, a bad boss dictates and does not listen to the opinions of the workers. The good boss, therefore, respects each employee ensuring that personal boundaries are maintained thought out. A bad boss does not respect personal boundaries, and in most cases harass the employees below him or her. The good boss removes all road blocks in the operation of the company while the bad boss creates many road blocks as he tries to justify his or her actions.
`In conclusion, although there are many differences between a good boss and a bad boss, one has to first analyze himself or herself and establishes whether he or she is the problem. At least no one wants to with a bad boss or a bad employee. Be a good boss to yourself first.
