I truly cherish and admire competence and compassion as the two most important human qualities that can get life and its purpose close to divinity. As a simple example of day and night or the age-old Chinese principle of Yin-Yang, Santa Clara University's (SCU) mission-vision statement emphasis on competence and compassion instills the balance and harmony between two seemingly different and often contradictory human qualities. In my pursuit of higher education, career goals and objectives, the principles of competence and compassion resonate very well and deeply attracted me to seek admission to SCU.
In the current competitive world, the principles of competence are the key aspects of higher education at most, if not all, the Universities. While these efforts certainly strive and succeed in training young minds to be highly competitive and competent, lack of emphasis on compassion can prevent them to realize their fullest potential. I certainly would like and promise to be an individual of high competence through learning, studying, thinking, and analyzing at the SCU. However, since competence is only one-half and compassion forms the other half in the meaningful existence of human life, I am eager to advance my understanding and knowledge of compassion together with a balance with competence skills.
I intend to practice competence to its pinnacles, but with compassion. I believe that compassion, the genuine desire to help others, comes from the heart while competence originates from the mind and individuals who practice both compassion and competence can be unstoppable forces of good in societies. I applaud SCU efforts in offering leadership development and training in competence and compassion. I would appreciate to be a part of leadership that shapes the humanity with the grandest vision. Thus, it is my deepest and heartfelt desire to be educated and trained at SCU.
