Admission Essay
Choosing to work for Quantum Mortgage Brokers, a small real estate brokerage firm, was indeed one of the best decision of my life, which I took at the onset of my professional career. The small setting in the organization helped me in gaining a holistic and practical understanding of the accounting world. The very ethical and dynamic accounting job, paved my thoughts to rise fast through the career.
In the beginning of my career as an accountant, my responsibilities in Quantum Mortgage Brokers revolved around preparation of vouchers, monthly reconciliation and the preparation of the financial statements. However, soon I was introduced to core financial profiles and third party facing responsibilities. At present, I am involved in continuous appraisal of controls and processes and effecting key changes to ensure reduced financial risk for the company. I am also responsible for maintaining regular contacts with the auditors, Insurance Brokers and other Representatives from Financial Institutions.
Apart from my mainstay job, i have also been working with a non-political social organization, Saltpond Forum. While the objective of the organization is empowering the youth with entrepreneurial skills by rotating funds on syndicate groups, my responsibilities revolves around ensuring that accounting standards among the syndicate are duly met. I also act as the financial controller of the organization at the same time.
Such experiences have solidified my innate interest in the analytical world of accounting and finance. Going forward, leveraging my experiences, networking acumen, and third party facing expertise, I would like to evolve as a Financial Controller and Risk Manager in a global trading firm. Acquiring wide range experiences, I intend to establish my risk management firm in the long run.
In Ghana, where a large group of industries/entrepreneurs are unaware of the new trends in the financial risk management and end up losing most of their money because of such ignorance of the knowledge principle, there is a lot to be done to increase the financial risk awareness of my countrymen. Through my firm, I intend to contribute effectively, albeit in a small way, to the financial well being of Ghana.
Thus, in order to successfully navigate through my goals, I am looking forward to the Master in Finance Programme of University of Toronto. The program not only offers a good mix of hard-core financial analytical skills and soft-combination and leadership-skills. This exclusive combination is what I need today. Furthermore, in a short conversation with existing students of the program, I also came to know about the industry relevant exposure offered by this program. This will help me in familiarizing myself with exploiting the opportunities in the finance world. Being located in Canada, one of the stable financial hub around the world, the program will offer me many opportunities to interact with successful Finance Professionals and learn from their expertise. A string alumni network of the program will also be an added advantage for me throughout the lifetime.
I am confident that Master in Finance program will further sharpen my professional competencies and take me to my goals.
