Admission essay
Here I would like to present my top three qualities that altogether will enable me to make a significant contribution to the university community.
First of all, I would like to mention my leadership skills that I have developed being a founding member of the Invisible Crown Club, the main purpose of which is to empower young people with self-confidence. Moreover, I have spent over 250 hours volunteering for community service including team leadership at the Rutledge H. Pearson Elementary school summer camp.
In addition, I have developed strong communication skills along with critical thinking having taken a speech class during my senior year. Not only has it helped me overcome my inherent fear of public speaking but also has assured me of the significance of effective communication, which I believe is a key to any conflict or problem that may arise. As a result of applying these skills in practice, I have become a better listener and managed to increase the impact of my speeches. I firmly believe that such skills would be beneficial for the entire university community, especially if I could address its problems in a position of class representative.
Finally, I have acquired organization and time management skills, which are particularly important when working on a project or sticking with deadlines at the university. Thanks to a dual enrollment called Student Learning Skills (SLS), I have learned how to prioritize everyday activities and stay focused and organized throughout the day. Besides, I would not have been able to juggle sports with education when attending the Paxon School of Advanced Studies but for the strict organization.
I am confident that these three skills will allow me to fully submerge in the university community and, thereby, contribute to it as much as I can.
How has your family history, culture, or environment influenced who you are?
I feel that family history, culture and the environment I was raised in were crucial factors that to a large extent formed myself as a person and helped me become who I am today.
Certainly, my strict upbringing as a child of a military officer had a predominant impact on my whole life. Growing up, I had to move to a different state every three years that made me adapt to new conditions quickly. Although I did not like to change the surroundings so often, later I understood that it had been an invaluable experience that had taught me to be flexible and fearless of change. Moreover, living in diverse communities let me explore their cultures, learn new languages and understand people better. The best lesson I learned was that any change could be for the better and that you just needed to see new opportunities opening in front of you.
Apart from that, switching from high school to a college preparatory school has also benefited me a lot. In doing so, I gained the opportunity not only to take AP and honors courses but also to better understand what I want to do in future. Subsequently, I could put a lot of effort in preparing for college which I believe is the first step towards the bright future.
Last but not the least important for me were my friends and family whose positive influence has undoubtedly helped me develop myself. The possibility of becoming the first child on my mother’s side to attend college would be the greatest accomplishment for me so far, while having younger siblings who consider you a role model is probably the strongest driving force for me to try and achieve more.
