Personal Statement
As a consistently passionate learner, I have good academic standing. I completed my basic education at York Early College Academy, which an affiliated school of CUNY York College, and then obtained my undergraduate degree at CUNY York College. At age 17, I took high school classes along with college classes and then graduated with advanced regents’ diploma along with more than 50 college credits. At age 19, I obtained my bachelor’s degree and gave my former schools recognition, which was published in the news media. At hindsight, I am a highly motivated person who has eagerness for success. Coupled with that, I am also hardworking, disciplined, and determined individual who has the willingness to give extra efforts for the things I want to achieve in my life. As such, I take pride in the endeavors that I undertake even when I have to make personal sacrifices. According to my loved ones, failure is never acceptable because it is always better to try things out rather than fail to make any attempts. Such guiding and motivating words of wisdom make me accomplish things with perseverance, zealousness, commitment, and devotion.
Why do I want to apply in your law school or would like to become an attorney? I have simple yet compelling reasons, which are not limited to the following. For me, law study is the most intellectually challenging and rewarding academic pursuit worldwide. Likewise, lawyers could have specialization ranging from one or more niches (e.g., civil litigation, employment law, green law). Additionally, I could possible work in government, law firms, or corporations. Having said all that, one of the main reasons I want to be an attorney is to be of service to individuals and groups who would be in need of my legal expertise. I would like to give justice to whom it is due. In other words, I would like to be in a unique position to extend my resources to people who have legal problems and then to become of further benefits to the public. I know that being a lawyer consequently brings in or with it huge earning potentials and prestige; however, for me, if and only if I would be a ‘good’ one – in its truest sense. Hence, being in the profession later on is less on monetary gain, but more on my possible lasting impact on the legal arena. My short-term objective is to get into your law school and do my best in most, if not all, of my courses. Further, my long-term goal is to graduate in law school with honors and then become a successful attorney. For me, success is defined by how much, no matter how small or big it is, beneficial contributions (for example, legal aids) people get from me so that they live normal lives. Should it be the case, in general, when I am already an attorney, I will use the things that I learned from your law school to improve myself, communities, other societies, and the world we all live in.
Further, to share with you a story that led me to apply for law studies is an issue about marital relationship. My female cousin got married and messed up with her husband. She lived with his husband for only 4.5 years and they currently have a 2-year old daughter. My cousin is not a good wife because she had an affair. Likewise, she did not perform her duties as a homewife, such as doing household chores (for example, cooking, cleaning, or doing the laundry). In short, she expected her husband to do everything. On January 27, 2015, the husband could not take it no more. Out of human emotional limit and infirmity, the husband became angry with her wife, yelled at her and informed her to start being a wife by helping him out. The wife left the house that very night and never came back home. Later on, the wife decided to put down half of the down payment the house they were living in; however, it was illegal to do so and did not go on the deed because it was a conjugal property. For whatever reason the wife has, she felt that her husband does not deserve anything and instead decided to file a divorce. At present, the couples’ case is in court: such that, the husband is paying for child support while working out the property. Because the husband did not have a good attorney, things went off in favor of his wife. For instance, the child’s custody is on her wife while he is not allowed to see his daughter without the administrator for children’s services being present. The father did not see his daughter since his wife and his child left their home on January 27, 2015.
Isn’t the story above personally touching? What if I were in the father’s place? What would I feel? I wouldn’t be able to tell my little girl how much I love her, such as during her birthday. She wouldn’t be able to greet me happy father’s day. There would be many things I would like and long to tell and show to my lovely daughter while days pass by. Thus, I want to be an attorney to speak up and fight for anyone who is the same position as the father was. Not because he is my cousin why I have to be on his side, as I told their story as a couple. I am more on fairness and justice, as well as, a little bit more on humaneness by taking into consideration human compassion to all parties concerned (that is, husband, wife, and child). Concisely stated, I want to defend those who do not know the law or their rights by being an upright lawyer in service to individuals and all of humanity.
