In this paper, Singer is demonstrating his concern for the ravaging hunger in the contemporary society. He reports that hunger has become a crisis especially amongst the poor nations. Many people have suffered a lot because of their inability to provide for themselves. However, he also claims that there is a large section of the society which is not worried about this menace since they have more than enough resources to spend on their necessities, luxuries and savings. In this regard, he appeals to anyone to contribute to the alleviation of hunger.
Of course, Singer is right. He presents a right picture of the real situation on the ground. Many people have really suffered from hunger. In most cases, it is the children who are highly affected because of their vulnerability. This is a very unfortunate situation because it negatively affects the lives of such people in many ways. First, it contributes to poor health. Besides, it results into school drop out and retarded economic prosperity. These are serious conditions which not only threaten life, but also results into death. Meaning, a lot of people have succumb to hunger and hunger related ailments. These explanations give clear evidence that hunger is a serious problem which needs to be resolved.
Surely, it is a sign of selfishness for people to keep all their resources for themselves. Instead, this paper establishes that it is appropriate for everyone to be concerned about one another. As Singer exclaims, the current societal disparities are not necessary. The war against hunger is not supposed to be left for the government, but should be fought by all the people. Its solution should be sought by everyone. Whenever there is any hungry person within a person’s neighborhood, they should take the initiative to provide them with the necessary support within their capacity. For instance, as Singer suggests, a paltry $1,000 saved from buying suits can save the lives of 5 children threatened by hunger.
True to his observation, many households have enough money to spend on their basic needs. However, essential they are, they should reconsider their expenditure and allocate a small portion to the poor. By this, they will have sacrificed their daily consumption for the benefit of the hungry. At the same time, they should prove their generosity by limiting their expenses on the luxurious commodities. Basically, these are non-essential commodities which every household can do without. They are merely meant to make life more comfortable and enjoyable. If such families set aside these monies and donate them to the hungry, they will not only provide food, but save the lives of many people which would otherwise be lost.
Conclusively, Singer produces an ideal proposal which presents the actual situation. True to his words, hunger has become a global crisis. Since it is a deadly thing, it should not be condoned. There is no point of spending huge sums of money on luxurious cars, magnificent houses and imported latest fashionable clothes while many children are sleeping without food. As this proposal suggests, such resources should be donated to the hungry families because they are in a dire need of food. It does not matter how smaller the donation is. What matters is that it can contribute in saving the dying populations. Thus, this proposal becomes a very important document which should be availed to all the people concerned about the welfare of humanity.
