The primary idea that the author Anne Lamott likes to express through the book ‘Bird by Bird’ is the joy and pride she feels about being a writer. She states that in order to become a better writer, one needs to writer as much as possible. Writing would successfully convey the writer’s ideas because, the writer has to first understand what is that he/she would like to write about. The first draft of any writer should be taken too seriously or analyzed too much, because each and every successful writer of the future would have written a terrible first draft. In a nutshell, Lamott states that writing can be a gift, only if pursued relentlessly without giving up after initial experiences of terrible drafts.
A few important things that I personally found to be helpful from this book are:
Just because anyone’s first attempt on any task, be it writing, or acting, or cooking, etc., turns out to be a disaster, it should not become a reason for the person to giving from giving it a try again.
With respect to writing, it is something ‘which reveals through itself .’ Relentless writing would gradually uncover the hidden abilities of the person attempting to write, and quite often (p. 38), even the person writing would not be aware of possessing such qualities. So, the pursuit should be continuous.
