Introduction
Leadership and management are both synonymous and have the onerous task of coordinating resources within the organization in the attainment of set objectives and goals. Through effective communication leaders and management of organization will be able to achieve targeted goals and objectives (Monge).
Leaders and managements of organizations are known to carry out the Luther Gulick’s POSCORD tasks. These include planning, organizing, staffing, coordinating, reporting and directing. All these functions are germane for the success and growth of any organization.
Areas where leadership and management are necessary
Leaders and managers of business organizations are active players in ensuring that organizations’ achieve their goals and objectives. Thus, members of an organization are motivated by leaders and managers for them to work effectively. Hence, he/she have the authority to assign punishment or give rewards for punishment for wrong doings and encouragement for hard works (Sim). Therefore, the management of an organization and leaders therein enable the members to be focus on targets set for the organizational growth.
A manager can maximize the contribution of a group through performing his or her managerial functions effectively. The managerial functions include: adequate planning, organizing of resources within the organization, directing on how best to execute tasks, coordinating and synchronizing resources, adequate budgeting, and putting in place good control system.
The different between leadership and management is that while leadership has to do with the acts of directing and motivating members of an organization towards attaining the organization’s set objectives and goals management is the coordination of available resources through adequate planning in order to get set objectives attained through other people. While leadership entails involving oneself by giving good example on how and why the job or task should be done, management involves getting people and resources to attain set objectives.
Hence, another specific area where leadership and management play great role in an organization is in the motivation of workers and making them more productive in meeting the organization’s sets goals and objectives. There is no single way of motivating workers in an organization. As human beings are different so are their motivational factors differs. There are two basic motivational theories: the motivational content theory and the motivational process theory. Both motivational theories looked on the different level of motivation that makes an individual to put an extra effort to increasing his productivity level. Hence, it is the task of management and leaders within the organization to find and implement the best way to motivate staff. In this view, Stephanie Chick said leaders and managers in organizations can greatly influence the attitudes and actions of workers to enable them perform more productively (qtd. Goldsmith 1).
