Summary
This case study is narrates the hiring process Benton Dickinson, a large medical research device company that failed to perform a background check on an applicant they hired to be the company’s director. Seymour Schlager was the applicant, and he had an impressive resume and qualifications. He was on hired on the spot because the hiring managers of Benton Dickinson were so impressed with the skills and qualification that he showed on his resume and they failed to do a background check on the applicant. Schlager did not include in his application that he was convicted for attempted murder and had been imprisoned for several years. Another company also failed to do a background check because they were impressed by an applicant’s resume and qualifications. Some weeks later they discovered that the applicant was not who he claimed to be and the company suffered for it financially.
- People applying for jobs are always motivated to display themselves in the best light, and as a result, this can sometimes lead to inaccurate portrayals of abilities; skills, experiences, and personality. Based upon what you have read in this chapter, how should you approach a job applicant’s written application and resume if your goal is to make sure that they accurately reflect the persons past experiences and accomplishments?
Hiring the best people for the job could prove to be a hectic process. To make sure that the candidate that is being hired is the person he or she says they are, it is important to look at the person’s social media profiles such LinkedIn and others. Also, it is important to contact the previous of the employer and to make sure they are not making up false identity or experiences. Contacting employers also helps the employer to know that there are no gaps in their employment history. Also, doing a background check is very important; it helps in pulling up the candidate’s history whether good or bad. Also, creating an assessment for the positions helps determine whether the applicant has the right qualifications and experiences. The assessment also asks some personality questions that only an applicant with past experiences can answer.
- In the face-to-face interview process, what steps can be taken to ensure that the applicant is being frank and honest with you, and what steps should you take if you feel that he or she is portraying an inaccurate picture himself or herself?
In a situation such as this, it is important for the employer to ask some personal questions regarding their previous skills. For instance employers can ask questions regarding their previous roles and skills. Also it is important to ask those questions relating to their education or what they studied in college. If the employer feels that the applicant is not portraying an inaccurate picture of themselves it is important ask them some basic personality questions to if they fit the personality on their resume. Sometimes it is also important for the employer to do some basic research on the applicant’s previous work places and personality.
- Beyond the traditional approaches of going over the application and conducting face-to-face interviews what other steps can you as an employer take to ensure that the person who is being hired for the job has the right abilities, skills, past experiences and personality?
The old face-to-face interviews are one of the best ways to hire an employee for a job. There some other ways that employers. One of the ways to ensure that the applicant has the right abilities, skills, past experiences and personality is to give them an assessment test. Many companies use assessment tests to hire potential candidates for the job. Assessments helps reduce the number of applicants to those who have the right qualifications. Another way is to use the resume database that picks up keywords from the applicants resume. Many employers use the resume database to check to look for the candidates with the right qualification. These two ways ensure that employers are hiring the right candidates with past experiences and qualifications. Employees without the right qualifications will be fanned out saving the employer the hustle of going through hundreds of applications daily.
