Teams that have access to facilitators or consultants tend to be more successful than those without. This paper describes the aspects that the facilitator or consultants bring into the team that leads to its success.
First, the facilitator ensures that the composition is appropriate. The facilitators guide the team in the analysis of its stakeholders and hence determine its composition. This creates awareness among the team members increasing its cohesion. The facilitators help in defining the goals and objectives the team seeks to achieve. Each meeting should always have specific goals that shall be met. This increases the capability of the team members to work harmoniously to achieve set goals. During the formulation of the goals and objectives of a meeting, the facilitators assist in the formulation of the agendas that are common and of great importance to all the team members. The agendas are formulated earlier and circulated to the members to make them aware of the expectations.
The facilitators moderate the team during discussions. Therefore, the facilitator shall help the team members by summarizing the key points during the meetings. The mandate of the facilitators also includes determination of the models to be used in making decisions. The models help to avoid conflict of interest among the members. It is also the duty of the facilitator to note the key points and decisions that the team agrees on. The facilitator also helps in the determination of the rules of engagement among the team members. This reduces chances of conflict in the team. It may involve the definition of the roles each play and the expected communication channels. The facilitator guides the team to establish a common vision and mission statements and core values that the team seeks to associate and abide to them. The external nature of the facilitator bonds the team team since he/she remain nonpartisan throughout meetings.
