- DQ1: HOW DOES ADAPTIVE LEADERSHIP LINK TO ISSUES OF FOLLOWERSHIP?
Adaptive leadership entails a leadership framework that helps people and organizations to adapt and do well in challenging environments. A good leader is defined as one who is able to positively influence people to follow him and his ideologies in order to achieve some set objectives (Uhl-Bien, Marion, & McKelvey, 2007). As such, followership and leadership are intertwined. However, in order for one to be a good leader, they have to have the skills to adapt themselves, and to guide their followers to adapt to challenging environments without losing sight of the set objectives.
- DQ 2: WOULD MORE ADAPTIVE LEADERSHIP ASSIST IN YOUR ORGANIZATION? WHY OR WHY NOT? WHAT COULD YOU DO TO ENABLE IT?
My organization would benefit from more adaptive leadership. This is so because, the organization will be in a position to manage meager resources and achieve the set objectives. An adaptive leader will guide fewer workers optimally and in accordance with their talents. He will also allocate scanty resources strategically and in order or priority. These issues point to adaptive leadership. In order to acquire the skills, training on leadership and management as well as on-the-job experience are the best ways to enable adaptive leadership in an organization (McLaurin, 2006).
- DQ 3: WHAT KINDS OF ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURES RESPOND BEST TO ADAPTIVE LEADERSHIP? WHY?
The kinds of organizational culture that can respond best to adaptive leadership are Adhocracy and market organizational culture. The adhocracy organizational culture is dynamic and entrepreneurial and it has a strong focus on risk-taking (Liang, 2007). The market organizational culture has a strong focus on achievement, competition, and “getting the job done” (Liang, 2007). As such, these organizational cultures accommodate and support structures to allow adaptive leadership to thrive.
- DQ 4. IDENTIFY A BUSINESS OR ORGANIZATION THAT YOU BELIEVE USES ADAPTIVE LEADERSHIP PRINCIPLES. DESCRIBE HOW YOU SEE THE MODEL USED IN THE ORGANIZATION AND ITS EFFECTIVENESS.
The mobile telephony industry uses the adaptive leadership principles. This is so because the clients’ demands are increasing and changing on a daily basis. Companies such as Vodacom, AT & T among many others have gradually shifted their focus from offering call and messaging services to mobile money transfers and offering of internet and data services. The models used in these cases are very integrative and dynamic. As such, these models are very effective in the application of adaptive leadership in these organizations.
