The studies in this unit were quite educational in trying to inform readers about the fashion industry. The readings also give readers a rough idea of the fashion industry’s influence on what people dress. I could not adjust my dressing style since I do not agree that the fashion industry controls everyone’s sense of fashion. I do my best to look good and I’m rarely affected by the mass’s sense of fashion (72 words).
Within the reality of fashion, I employed the theories on conscious consumption, social imaginations and collective conscience to argue my stand. When the three are combined, it becomes easier to address the influence of the fashion industry on people’s choice of dressing (46 words).
I decided to pay close attention to my friend’s and mom’s comments about their dressing on a daily basis. I also analyzed myself on how I perceive fashion from what I put on. I often heard most girls complement each other on daily basis on what they are wearing and my mother is always curios before work to know if she looked good. I believe that such actions are based on social imagination where one wants to look and feel in tune with what the society perceives as good looking, descent or even sexy (60 words).
When on some occasions I tried out some new style of dressing just for the heck of it, the start felt rather odd and this explains the sociological imagination that happens with most people. Confusing thoughts and feelings of weirdness, self-suspicion, confidence all bog the mind since one is self-aware of what he or she puts on (60 words).
The other most practical theory in everyday life is conspicuous consumption. This is whereby most people would love to put on that bear famous brand names. For me, Nike shoes make me feel better than others, but for some it goes just beyond the shoes. Some people are obsessed with brand from top to bottom just for show off. I realized that some people are really affected by the current fashion trends in the society. Surprisingly, some even live for the sake of it (60 words).
