Created in 1981, Crac by Frederic Back is enjoyed by the audience of all ages even nowadays. The Academy Award winner for Best Animated Short Film brings the good vibes with its warm colors and the festal traditional French-Canadian music.
The main character of the 15 minutes film is the rocking chair – all the events throughout Crac happen around it and with its participation. The change of human ages, nature seasons, and the view of the landscape marks the passing of time in Montreal. The author wanted to show the transformation of the city from its wild origin to the industrialization after the World War II. Everything changes but the rocking chair stays the same in its prettiness and attraction for children. Paying attention to the details of animation, it becomes obvious that the author, consciously or not, was hugely inspired by impressionists and modernists as well. It seems like the scenes with a woman in the rocking chair remind the painting The Garden Chair by Frederick Carl Frieseke.
The role of the museum guard that the audience meets in the end of the film can be metaphorically interpreted as the savior of the old traditions and the cultural heritage. He is the one who remembers and respects the past; the one who tries to give it a new life and pay the attention of the rest to it. In the film, he saves the rocking chair which was thrown away by its previous owners.
The rocking chair is the example of an object that is a culture transmitter. The rocking chair is a safe place where babies are told stories, where family bounds are created. The associations with objects differ from generation to generation, and sometimes, the object that brings the sweetest childhood memories for one person says nothing at all to another one from the younger generation. It is important to save all the elements of culture and traditions of every nation because that is what forms the person’s identity. Saving and respecting such elements starts from the family unit which hugely contributes to the history and development of even the tiniest area of the city and country in global meaning.
Crac by Frederic Back is the work of art with a positive and very important message directed for not forgetting about the human roots and taking care of the past.
