Creative thinking has often much to do with occasional yet productive wandering of thought, which sometimes causes difficulties to articulate one’s opinion and sometimes leads to eloquent and constructive expression of one’s mind. While for most writers resorting to strategies of metaphorical thinking is regarded a sure way to be understood by others, it is actually a matter of dispute whether metaphors and comparisons are relevant tools for meaningful self-expression. It can hardly be denied that figures of speech might mar the bigger picture of overall sense, leaving black stains on awkward and inappropriate meaning use.
On the one hand, metaphors and comparisons appear to be effective attention attractors that appeal to the reader’s subtlety of thinking and call for creative cooperation with the writer. In this light, figures of speech found in the text determine the potential of meaning construction and sense navigation. On the other hand, since meaning capacity of metaphors and comparisons is revealed within the bounds of a sentence, they may hinder further perception of the text by recurrently drawing the reader’s attention to the corresponding fragment. In other words, if a metaphor / comparison creates an intense or dramatic ‘flavor’ of meaning, it is very likely that the reader, when stumbling upon it, will not be able to get hold of his concentration and lose the gist of the text by continually referring to the “mesmerizing” context of language use. The issue might seem somewhat exaggerated but it aims at outlining the necessity to substantially opt for language expressiveness in the text.
In conclusion, original ideas in the canvas of the text are undeniably mechanisms to equip it with sophisticated interplay of meaning and sense. Thus, metaphors and comparisons should be harmoniously interwoven with other elements of meaning without disrupting its integrity.
