London Olympics 2012- Role of IOC’s Planning, Leadership and Controlling in the Success of the Event
Olympic is the leading event of international sports that features the winter and summer sports competition. Thousands of sportsman and athletes participate in Olympics from all over the world. Around 200 nations participate and therefore, the event is considered as the most important sports event of the world. The event is being hosted by different countries that are selected by International Olympic Committee (IOC). In 2012, the committee had selected London as the host region for Olympic event of 2012. Although, Olympic is a successful event, however, it has witnessed from many people that London Olympics have made extraordinary success (UK Government and London Mayor, 2013). Therefore, the article is going to analyze the role of planning, leading, and process and controlling of IOC in the astonishing success of the event in London in reference to the organisations of the London Olympics.
The government of UK and London Mayor were contracted with IOC for different responsibilities of the event. According to the study, any event either for profit or non-profit, must be organized ensuring total quality management. The risks are higher in the events because of the possibilities of the unpredicted circumstances. Therefore, the proper planning of management including risks, cost, finance, communication, role and responsibilities is very important to deliver a successful event (Dumitrasca & Nedelcu, 2012). The success of London Olympics 2012 was mainly happened because of the proper planning of IOC for management of the event. For dealing with the risks at the event, it had contracted with UK government and assigned the responsibilities in well proper structure. Prime Minister was responsible for financial and operational planning, Home Secretary was responsible for security and Chancellor of the Exchequer was assigned to support the event financially (Home Office, 2011). It shows that IOC made all efforts in successful management of finance, risks and cost of the event.
For total quality of the event, the monitoring and controlling is very important to identify the impact of strategies, planning and actions on the success of the objectives and purposes. Therefore, IOC had contracted with London Mayor to chair the Olympic board for control and monitoring of the event (Home Office, 2011).
According to Miller & Oliver (2015), the project success is directly linked with the stakeholders. Therefore, the management must make efforts to engage stakeholders in the planning, leading and controlling of the event. It shows that the success of the London Olympics 2012 was resulted in the efforts of IOC to make different stakeholders such as the government of UK, Mayor of London and many others directly engage in the management of the event. IOC is considered as the guardian for the Olympic event (International Olympic Committee, 2013). Gate keeping and protection are the major qualities of the successful leadership to deliver the innovative production or solution (Gastwirt, 2000). All the responsibilities and roles to different departments such as LOCOG (The London Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games), Olympics Delivery Authority, Olympic and Paralympic Security Directorate, London Mayor, UK government etc were assigned by IOC.
