The picture I uploaded features an Asian child staring directly into the camera. Noteworthy of this photo is the reality that it was not taken in some Asian city, but in the United States mainland. Here, it must be noted that recent socio-cultural, economic, and academic developments have necessitated a transformation of the American society from a solely Caucasian and African-American based community into a mixture of different cultures. This social change is easily observable in schools and universities, churches, communities, and even in the racial construct of our nation’s political leaders.
As such, there is a certain level of social deviance in the uploaded photo because it reveals that American transformation: from a two-racial background into a highly diversified society. This photo shows the modern or contemporary American child—one who may be of foreign descent but nevertheless still American in the sense that he or she enjoys the same rights and privileges of Caucasian and African-American children of past ages.
Indeed, the American society has truly transformed into a diversified community. It no longer exhibits two racial backgrounds, the Whites and the Blacks, as its representatives, but may be of Middle-Eastern, Asian, European, Slavic, or other global regions. The uploaded photo of the Asian child proves this point. It is social deviance in the sense that it defies the age-old and previously-held perception of ‘who’ and ‘what’ can be considered as American. As such, to be an American is no longer about racial lineage, but has come to be about a person’s birthright.
