The various schools of thought in psychology have their own ways of approaching issues that define human beings. These schools of thought are sometimes referred to as the first, second and third forces of psychology. The first force is behaviorism, the second force, psychoanalytic while the third force is the humanistic approach. The third force was propagated by thinkers who thought that the other forces were too pessimistic and did not take into account how personal choice can determine behavior.
There are major differences that are seen between the first force and the third force. The two seem to be similar because their central tenets are focused on behavior but the difference comes in when it comes to how these behaviors are learnt. In the first force, behavior is learnt by way of exposure to certain stimulus and after a while, a person picks the behavior. The third force on the other hand focuses on the role played by free will. An individual makes their isolated choices and acts on them without really having to be subjected to a certain routine.
The second force states that people do not have any control over their actions. Human actions are determined by their unconscious and therefore people cannot do anything about them. The third force differs with this force on grounds that when it is a person’s free will then their actions do not really have anything to do without the unconscious. The third force again goes further to state that people are always motivated to grow as people while the second force states that our motivation is based on sex. These are the major different ways in which psychologists interpret behavior.
