In the course of my observation, I drew a conclusion that men and women communicate quite differently, regardless of the topic being discussed or any other factors. I made my observations in a food outlet, where 5 persons were sharing a table. There were 2 men and 3 women holding a conversation with each other. I employed behavior observation in order to analyze how men and women actually communicate.
The results of my observation demonstrate that women tend to be more talkative than men and express their opinions in a more straightforward manner. In the meantime, when women wanted to voice their opinion, they interrupted other speakers, regardless of their sex, more often than men did. On the contrary, men heard others speakers out in the first place, and expressed their opinions after another speaker had ended his speech. It also should be noted that one of the men present was interrupted more often than any other speaker, probably, due to his slow and even tedious manner of speaking.
In general, during the course of the observation, I fell under the impression that women felt more relaxed during this conversation as they were not afraid or shy to express their thoughts and opinions. Two women, each of whom spoke for 8 minutes, could be definitely described as extraverted personalities. in actual fact, they directed the entire communication process.
I was not surprised by the results of the observation as it is a common knowledge and an ascertained fact that women tend to be more talkative and take active part in the process of communication. Nevertheless, I do not consider my findings to be representative enough, as they were based on a narrow selection of individuals and the observation process itself did not take considerable time.
