The last quarter of the nineteenth century has seen major changes on the views about capitalism that for the past many years has had much criticism. For the past years, capitalism has been criticized but according to Joyce Appleby in her book The Relentless Revolution; capitalism was neither an inevitable development in the human history nor was it a natural phenomenon. She instead notes that capitalism growth was fuelled by many necessary cultural conditions in a dynamic world. She argues that the shift in people’s lifestyle was a major contributing factor to the fuelled growth in capitalism. Appleby notes that the industrial revolution was not a specific factor that led to widespread capitalism like previous researchers had done, but rather terms it as a cultural growth.
In his book, Davis has given several factors that led to the El Nino droughts that were experienced on parts of Africa and China after the great rain which led to flooding in most parts of these continents. The first point that he notes is that the flooding that came from El Nino destroyed crops. Many crops were destroyed by the rain that covered most parts of the continents. The famine was also brought by the destruction of people’s property, consequently the destruction of property destroyed many people ways of earning their living. Loss of a way to earn their living translates to poverty that makes the drought inevitable.
Davis also attributes the draught to the free trade that occurred between the affected countries and major countries such as Britain. Before the emergence of free trade to these countries, the natives believed in food security and hence they produced massive amounts, however, after adoption of free trade, policies were put up to ensure massive commercial production of products. Racism had also a part to play in the draught, despite the huge amounts of grains that were produced in India; much of it was transported to England. When the famine struck, the excess foodstuff that was in England was not transported back to India, but instead only the English people benefited from it.
Our viewpoint or conviction of rightness will limit the way we understand ideologies, this is because we are most likely to approach the ideologies with a closed mindset believing that we already have perfect knowledge of the issues. The conviction of rightness will limit the understandability of the concepts.
