The article by Richard Paddock titled ‘Trump Business Partner Is Philippines’ New Trade Envoy to U.S.’ reveals a lot concerning the economic relations between America and the Philippines. The South American country’s president, Rodrigo Duterte, did not name President Trump’s business partner in Manila as the special envoy to America in vain. In fact, it has been observed as a move to position the Philippines strategically with regards to its economic relationships with America, and particularly with President Trump. Notably, this could be seen as a potential advantage for the Philippines as a country, Duterte and Jose Antonio.
When looking at this issue from a different perspective, President Trump has been doing business in Manila for many years. He has several business interests in the city. Therefore, when the Philippines president appointed Mr. Antonio as a special envoy to America, he was positioning in a bid to have favorable trade and investment relations with the new American President (Paddock). On this note, there was no better candidate than Donald Trump’s associate in Manila. The two business people have been working together, and therefore are known to each other at a personal level.
The move to appoint Mr. Antonio in that position promises good economic returns for the Philippines because Mr. Antonio may persuade President Trump to take some American investments to the Philippines, as well as encourage private companies to invest in the country. More jobs would be created for the people of the Philippines. As a result, large revenue would be collected by the government, and there will be a rise in the general development of infrastructure in the country (Paddock). American investors are also likely to be more favored than other international venture capitalists in the country. In other words, they are likely to be given more lenient terms and conditions of operating in the nation.
