The brand name of the product that makes use of the ‘greenwashing’ concept is the Tyson’s chicken. The picture below shows a boneless, skinless chicken breast product from Tyson. However, other chicken parts are packed in a similar package. The packaging material and appearance is shown below represent only a few of what they are selling.
The company’s product has a big 100% all natural sign on the front part. This can also be identified in some other products made from chicken as seen from the above presented photos. Despite such labels found on several meat products and more so the ones from factory farms, there’s so much that is misplaced and faulty bout them. The “100 % all natural” label on chicken’s packages is false. Tyson’s treats its chicken with antibiotics such as bacteria killing ionophores. Tyson had argued that the ionophores treating its chicken were actually antimicrobials not antibiotics. However the USDA who were on their neck due to the claims, ascertained that ionophores are indeed antibiotics and that they “all natural” message is misleading.
The qualifications and disclosures on §260.3 general principles section states that, the disclosure should be largely typed which Tyson adhered to. However, this does not prevent them from the ‘greenwashing’ claims against them. FTC depicts guidelines on how to ascertain a claim as the one made on this paper. Section§260.2 gives an overview statement pointing that, there must be sufficient enough and backed by relevant scientific tests. In our case the claims were indeed just as they had received backing from USDA and that they had falsely sold to the public products having misleading disclosure.
