Introduction
I found myself thinking sociologically when I found that equality in Canada among the two genders was on the way to being the most enhanced in the world. Canada have for so many years named the top ranking in improving the conditions for their female citizens (Canadianwomen.org 5). The government is convinced that the equality between men and women should be implemented for the economic development in the country. It has done several developments to ensure that this happens. Canada has tried its best in enhancing some of the gender equality policies. Some of the successful policies are the access to basic education and high level education. It has also successfully enhanced equality in the issue of economic participation and opportunities (Canadianwomen.org 5). Both genders have been granted equal chances in the political presentation and participation too. There is still a long journey for the country to achieve its objectives of equality in women especially in the job situation. However, the war is still on to ensure success in all the sectors (Byrnes, and Adams 37). On the other hand, this has seen Canada develop economically along with other benefits which the country cannot regret considering the gender equality as one of their most enhanced value and policy. This paper outlines the arguments surround the sociological battle to ensure equality in gender as it is seen in Canada and its impact to several sectors.
Literature review
Sociologists all over the world have studied the whole issue on gender equality. This is not only in Canada but the study has been conducted in the whole world. This shows that this part of study is vital and contributes to most of the sociologist writing. In the study as mentioned in the essay, the most parts they look into include health, education, employment, political participation and economic participation. These are the key sectors in each country which determines its development (Crossman 35). This key sector on the other hand requires that both genders participate in them equally to diagnosis gender equality in a certain country. This implies that most of the arguments and conclusions on the issue of gender equality are mostly based on the issues mentioned above. They therefore make the basic outline for this paper. On the other hand, sociologists have deduced that gender equality has been on the rise in most developed countries in the world such as Canada (Canadianwomen.org 5). This has seen the research the impact of this factor. It is also a point of study on the impacts of gender equality. As the fights to achieve gender equality is enhanced in Canada at all cost, what are the relative results for the fight. The equality contributes to the economic growth of the country. It promotes the level of education generally in the country as well as foreign investments. According to sociologists, countries such as Canada which fights for gender equality will always receive major economic boosting. It also ensures that peace and harmony is ensured in the country by the citizens. Gender equality is thus such an achievement that the sociologist argues that every country in the world should take the necessary steps to reach standards of gender equality. Their argument is strongly backed by the fact that the United Nations has also a wing which deals with the issue and keeps on analyzing its member’s effort on the issue (Canadianwomen.org 5).
According to sociologists John and Linda, the authors of sociology Canada fifth edition, their point of view on the battle to ensure gender equality takes the same route (Macionis, and Linda 3). The fight for equality according to them is based in the same perspectives as outlined in the essay. It is about the equality in economic participation where by early twentieth century, Canada had made steps to ensure which seventy four percent of the male population was employed; seventy percent of the women were too employed (Macionis, and Linda 3). This fight has since continued indicating that the equality level has risen since then. On yet another basis of comparison is education. According to journal and Linda in their writing, gender equality in education has also been enhancing (Byrnes, and Adams 37). Sometimes in the past, women were highly discouraged from taking higher education. However, this is not the case. They are now encouraged to make greater heights in different careers of their interest with an assurance of back up by the government and NGOs where necessary.
Women and politics are yet another factor which makes the contribution to the battle towards gender equality. Sometimes in Canada, women were not eligible to vote. This is according to John and Linda in the reference of the 1914 elections in Canada (Gender Quality 3). This however improved several years; later where by the 1940 election, women were free to vote as well as vie for some of the post in the political arena. Representation of women politically according to this sociologist is one of the major break through which sees the battle to equality even more successful.
In their other bits of argument on this issue, they discuss about gender minority and superiority. The pair of sociologist sees this issue as the inheritance of what was in the past (Bailey 56). However, as the war on equality is gaining as days goes, the same way the minority and superiority factor continues to fade each day. This sees the two genders on the same platform of discussion (Gender Quality 3). The other factor is violence. In the socials world, there is a practice of violence; this violence in Canada mostly affected the women and children. Gender violence however has taken another route after the discovery that its bases is on power. This shows that there is no power to fight for thus equality will be enhanced (Crossman 5).
Some theorist also participates in the issue of gender equality. However, their argument is based on feminist aspects and social conflict analysis not forgetting the structural-function analysis of gender. These forms are the three main arguments for the theorists. Some of the theorists involved in this argument include Friedrich Engels and Talcott Parsons (Crossman 35).
The arguments based on the sociologist and theorist study on the issue of gender equality are very important for my research. They form the basis and the outline to record material regarding the whole topic of equality on. On the other hand, they are a major resource of information regarding gender equality. Considering that the topic is deeply researched on and discussed, before making own claims and conclusion, it is important to consider what other professionals say about the same issue (Crossman 35). This helps to integrate the point of view, compare them and contrast them and finally make a well informed decision and conclusion as well.
Argument
Gender equality as outlined in the introduction is the major insight for this paper. In regard to its condition in the republic of Canada and considering what the theorists and sociologists says about the issue, it is a major issue of consideration in the country. The country is named by several international organizations as one of the best in fight for gender equality (Hobbs, and Rice 69). It is one of the government policies and objectives to see the equality among the two genders enhanced. Gender equality is based on a theorist perspective of feminism. This theory helps to define the several sectors in which gender equality should be ensure and which the government tries to enhance as each day goes (Boundless 4).
Feminism is defined as the advocacy of social equality for the sexes in opposition to patriarchy and sexism. Its first wave in this country occurred in the 19th century, culminating with the right to vote for women (Bailey 56). This participation of the women in the society have steered more other factors of gender equality. It was vital for the women to choose who would represent them politically.tin their choice, the looked forward for equality in more sectors as it had happened in the political arena (Bailey 56).
There are several basic is feminism which have contributed to gender equality in Canada and continues to do the same in the present day. Feminists suggest that personal experiences are linked to gender. Feminist continues to deduce that, the personal attitudes and actions toward the opposite gender are some of the major contributions to how the society views gender as (Boundless 4). It is in this perspective that the society considers the five main aspects of gender. These aspects include the importance of change. There is importance of continuous change on the attitude towards the opposite gender especially on the male perspective (News, Bloomberg 34). They ought to see women as equal partners rather than minority. The other factor according to feminists is expanding the human choice. Human choice should not be enclosed on the basis of traditional and ancient believes but the modern and the new beneficial aspects. Broadening of this choice makes a big contribution in the battle for gender equality (Dwivedi 34). According to feminist, gender stratification should be eliminated. It is one of the roots to social inequality as far as gender is concerned. For this reason, it should be seen out of the minds of the society. Instead the society should promote sexual autonomy where both genders will be considered on a well thoughtful manner (News, Bloomberg 34).
There are several factors where the feminist theories have been applied in the battle towards achieving gender equality in Canada (Boundless 4). Considering that Canada is the best country in the fight towards gender equality, most of its offices and staffs are based on the feminist theory. In the early twentieth century, women were not allowed to vote in the country neither were they allowed to represent the citizens. Politics by then was a male tuff and women were kept very far from it (News, Bloomberg 34). This factor in one way or the other did not consider the factor of gender autonomy. Instead it is total stratification on the female part. However this changed, the principal whom contributes to change in the feminist theory applied, the human considered a broader way of making a decision where they considered women as their equal partner thus should participate in functions of building the country politically (OECD 5). In this way, several years later the women were allowed to participate in election as well as represent their counterparts politically. This was the basis of gender equality in Canada as from then, they have improves with heights (Dwivedi 34).
In education, women were never seen as objects of education in the ancient Canada. This was not different as in many other countries the case was the same. However, in the due course, this changed. Women were not encouraged to study through the higher education. However, this changed later in the twentieth century (Dwivedi 34). They were encouraged to pursue their careers to the maximum heights. This was an advantage economically to Canada as they did not hold any potential case from contributing to the development of the country.
Still on the same aspect, women were in the past not allowed into the job arenas. They were left for the domestic and unpaid tasks back at home. However this changed in the early twenty first century. It was during this time that they. According to statistics, as seventy four percent of the male were in the job arena, seventy four percent of the females were also in the same situation (Boundless 4). Considering that since then there have been developments, it is evident that there is gender equality among women in the job arena.
Conclusion
Gender equality is highly considered in Canada. It is one of the best countries as far as gender equality and the fight towards achieving it is concerned. This has improved the status of the female family in many perspectives such as education, political and economic. This has been on the basis of the feminist theory which has outlined the change.
