I am a woman with three children and we both work as Textiles workers in Wilson’s mill. I did not complete my studies because I felt that it was necessary for meet all my basic needs because my parents could not provide for all my needs. My husband used to work in another factory before he was diagnosed with a certain disease. He was given leave to seek medication care. It is now more than two weeks, he is still at home and my efforts to be granted permission to have time to care for him have been in vain. This is because the manager of this textile industry told me that there would be no salary for the time that I will be away.
The small wage that I get from here could not sustain my family and me. Some expenses, for example those associated with medical care, could not be met with my wage. I made my children join me in the work so that we can maximize our earnings. The fact that they used to go to school, and they required school fees to get that education, meant additional expenses to me that I could not satisfy meet.
The working conditions at this place are not conducive, especially for my children. Our supervisor is very hot-tempered, and he beats the young children when he finds them asleep during the working time. I never comment on such acts because sometimes I see it better than if the children could be fined. Working as a woman is very challenging and requires a lot of sacrifice and commitment. There are many issues that a woman is expected to fulfill. She is not only expected to take care of herself but also her entire family (Womeninworldhistory.com). Thus, a working woman should be treated with due respect and honor.
