The documentary about Muslim Americans presented the question of the position held by Muslims in America’s political and social sphere today and more so, the perception held by the majority of Americans about the Muslim community ("PBS America At A Crossroads: The Muslim Americans"). Owing to the many terrorist attacks carried out on American soil by Muslim extremists, the innocent Muslim Americans take the blame for actions done by people whose only likely link to them is their religion of Islam.
Prior to watching the documentary, I anticipated to get enlightened on the plight of American Muslims post the 9/11 attacks. Certainly there have been numerous stereotypes brandished on the American Muslims and there have had to undergo a lot of prejudice. Based on this, I anticipated Muslims featured in the documentary to express their bitterness and anger for their current woes.
After viewing the documentary on America at a crossroads, several elements presented themselves as crucial. Some of the elements are what I had anticipated to see in the documentary. First, the experience of Muslim communities after the September 11 (9/11) terror attack and the social isolation they got from the general public. This is well presented as some of those interviewed noted that they had once been suspected to be terrorists. Muslims are certainly being discriminated and it is time this problem is addressed. However, what seemed surprising is the fact the individuals. didn’t seem to be bothered by the incident. Does the Muslims think the Quran or the Jihad propagates violence? Is it okay for Muslims and Christians to inter marry? Should Muslims be accountable for the sins of their members? These were certainly the issues the documentary could have highlighted. Therefore, I feel that the producers failed in coming up with an enlightening documentary.
