Analysis of Company’s Training and Development Policy
HRM policies are essential for any organization to avoid legal obligations. It is important for an organization to maintain proper HRM policy to promote the performance of its human resources. The paper has been developed to observe the training and development policy of Steven Roswell that is a sheet metal manufacturing and fabrication company and finds out the effectiveness of the policies after considering the performance of its employees and other legal regulations. The training and development policy presents the strategies that are used by Steven Roswell to improve its workforce’s skills and knowledge. The paper tends to suggest several changes in the training and development policies of the company for the betterment of its workforce and the organization.
The main purpose of the training and development policy is to provide a guideline that must be followed to carry on the training and development program in the organization to meet the requirement of skills and provide the employees with a better career path. The policy focuses on maintaining a continuous learning system that can develop the skills of the individuals and enhance their performance (Simeons). Steven Roswell aims to ensure that following facts:
Sufficient funding in the budget to cover the training expenses.
Employees understand the job functions and performance standards expected of them.
Employees get the opportunity to learn and gain experience.
Employees get encouraged to develop their personal skills.
The training and development policy of Steven Roswell includes the following terms:
Annual appraisal system: Steven Roswell has different appraisal system for each and every particular job. It provides the management with an opportunity to review the employees’ performance.
New Employees: The Company provides the new staffs with an induction program cover several topics. New employees undergo three months training period. They need to demonstrate a high level of productivity and better workmanship.
Training file: The training file is maintained by the managing director of the company. It includes skills and competency matrix, personnel training records, training and development policy and plan, and external training certificates.
Human Resource Planning: It contains the terms of training and development opportunities that are provided to all the employees of the company to maximize their skills and knowledge. It develops the company’s human resources’ experience base and skills base and improves the performance level of the company.
It can be seen by analyzing the training and development policy of the company that there are some problems with the present policy and procedure of Steven Roswell. The company can utilize the given advice that could help it to develop the efficiency of the training and development program. Hence, the company needs to make changes in the training and development policy to improve the performance level of the employees (Suutari and Burch).
Being a sheet metal manufacturing and fabrication company, existing training and development policy of Stevens Roswell must be overviewed to provide a better work environment for the organizational human resources. Some of the advantages and disadvantages of existing training and development policy of the organization have been presented as follows.
Advantages
Enhancement of human resources’ skill: The current training and development policy of Steven Roswell has efficiently targeted to enhance some of the laser cutting, punching, welding and folding skills of the human resources to produce excellent work efficiency.
Individual training request facility: The selected training policy has been aimed to provide individual training facilities for the talented employees as per request of the human resources so that the standard of the new workforce can be improved (Hendershot).
Disadvantages
Lack of Health and Safety training: On the other flip, the existing policy has required Health and Safety training facilities that can be one of the major negative points of existing training and development policy.
Lack of knowledge sharing techniques: The policy cannot provide sufficient facility to deliver effective knowledge sharing techniques so that the newly appointed employees can learn from the experts of the organization.
Lack of monitoring system: Finally, the poor monitoring system of the training procedure can be termed as another downbeat of the existing training and development policy of the organization.
Therefore, understanding the positives and negatives of the policy, it is necessary for the organization to make effective changes in the current training policy as per the Workplace Health and Safety Regulations (Bull). It is mandatory to train the employees in order to secure their life within the workplace.
There are two recommendations can be produced to upgrade the existing training policy described as follows.
Health and Safety training facilities: Following the Workplace Health and Safety Regulations recommended for the industrial companies, the organization must provide significant training facilities to the human resources which have been engaged in the risky jobs such as laser cutting, punching, welding, and folding. Use of latest technology and proper safety equipment must be promoted to the organizational workers to secure their life from any workplace hazard (Hindle).
Quality assessment program in training and development policy: Understanding the outcomes of the training facilities provided by the organizational human resources, quality assessment of the training facility must be reviewed to upgrade the policy requirement. A Proper review of the comprehensive training and development policy can deliver an in-depth analysis of the factors to be added to improve the current performance of the human resources. Hence, evaluation of the training facilities must be conducted at the workplace.
