1. Souhiel/The Memory Palace
2. Souhiel's introduction was captivating and attention-grabbing, when he asked if anyone in the audience knew the definition of a memory palace. Although I thought he read too many of his notes while delivering his speech, overall, his presentation and delivery were very impressive. Also, he wrote down talking points, and the class practiced the Memory Palace test.
The memory palace is a type of brain training, and, as a class, we explored how it works. The bottom line was that the exercises showed how the brain excels at some tasks, but performs poorly at other tasks.
3. One of the exercises involved asking the class to think about what we would do in the future. Not only was the exercise fun, it was a worthwhile demonstration of the underlying principles of how the memory palace works. However, Souhiel lost points, in my opinion, by not establishing good eye contact with the class. As I was unfamiliar with the topic, I found the techniques that entailed visualization of objects extremely interesting, and an effective tool for improving memory.
1. Maria/Where, When, and How to Visit Disneyland
2. Maria spoke about Disneyland, and suggested that visitors should wear comfortable clothing that is appropriate for the weather. She also advised that tourists check their cell phones for weather forecasts. She said that many people visit Disneyland for the food. Maria advised that visitors eat snacks when they are hungry, and carry drinking water. She also said that the fireworks show is a must-see, and informed us that there is an app that informs visitors about waiting times while in long lines. Moreover, she advised that visitors take advantage of Fast Passes, and other methods that help visitors save money.
3. Overall, I thought Maria did a good job, as her volume, hand gestures, and presentation were very thorough. However, I thought that this speech did not qualify as an informative speech, as it seemed like such a commonsense type of topic which everyone should know at least something about. I thought that the topic was interesting (because I like Disneyland), but somewhat dull and uninformative, at times.
1. Joshua/Caraphenilia
2. Joshua explained that caraphenilia is characterized by major depression caused by a broken heart, e.g. when someone leaves a person forever. He said that the disease can lead to overeating, feelings of insecurity, and can even kill people. He also advised that people should get rid of all things (mementos, gifts, etc.) that remind the sufferer of the loss.
3. I thought that Joshua's presentation about this illness was very interesting, and the personal touch made his speech more appealing, as he once suffered from the illness. However, I also thought that he could have offered a more in-depth presentation about possible treatments of this disease. I thought that his speech was intense, especially because it related to our emotions. Moreover, everyone can identify with the experience of losing someone who is important in their lives. Thus, for personal reasons, this topic struck a chord with me.
1. Nick/Formula 1 Racing
2. Nick explained that Formula 1 cars are very expensive, "open wheels" cars which are high-tech, and very fast. Interestingly, many cars manufactured by Mercedes use Formula 1 technology to enhance their performance. A year-long sport, Formula 1 racing is also a team sport. The pit crew, in fact, is just as important as the driver's racing skill, in many ways, since they must perform their duties very quickly when a car needs maintenance (such as a routine tire change) during a race. In modern Formula 1 racing, Nick explained, points are tallied by how many spaces a car moves forward from a starting position during a race. He said that it generally takes about 20 races a year in order for a racing team to win a championship.
3. I thought that this was an extremely relevant topic to me because I am interested in auto racing, as well. However, I did not know that much about Formula 1 racing until Nick's informative speech. While Nick's volume during his speech was extremely low, it was very informative, as I learned many new things about Formula 1 racing.
