Good Example Of Essay On Chinese Political/Economic Development During The Period 1850-1949

As recorded in the history of the Chinese people, in regards to political/economical development, it is apparent that events that worked to suppress the political and economic development of China do exist. By particularly focusing on these events, this paper will present the problems that retarded the Chinese political/economic development during the period of 1850 to1949.
Political instability was more insightful and profound in the period 1850-1949. Though the Qing dynasty had established itself over the many years in power, China became internally inert and externally endangered by the western powers that were well established during the 19th century. Chinese downturn was fostered by the defeat they succumbed in the first Opium War against the British Empire in 1840. The defeat was apparently a huge setback for China owing the fact that it led to the treaty of Nanking, a treaty that worked to repress Chinese power on the global map. Subsequent to 1840, the Chinese begun facing numerous political and economical challenges. These problems were primarily fostered by numerous military defeats and unequal treaties they signed with other western powers that were in effect unfavourable towards the Chinese people.
Another factor that retarded Chinese progress is the internal conflicts that picked pace after 1840. The Taiping Rebellion that lasted from 1851 to 1864 was apparently the most disheartening. The war that erupted subsequent to this movement retarded the economical and political development of China in many apparent ways owing its destruction and loss of lives succumbed consequently.
Though the Chinese institutionalized the Self-Strengthening Movement that was particularly meant to reinforce and reinstate a stable political state by eradicating calamities. This reform was undermined and suppressed by cynicism, corruption, and conflicts within the imperial family.
As stated in the above essay, it is apparent that various events that took place in the history of the Chinese people retarded the political and the economic development of this country. The major events that retarded the political, and the economic development of China include, the first Opium War against the British, Taiping Rebellion, and finally cynicism, corruption, and conflicts within the imperial family.
