Brad Carrington, American is a fantasy short fiction story. The author gets the reader into a real world, but creates an unreal story in it. Along with human characters, there is also a speaking and thinking puppet dog character, who is an ultimate participant of all the events. Fantastic transformations of the yard and inside the house where the events take place, some absurd actions of the characters and the whole atmosphere of nonsense are all the literature devices the author uses in order to reveal his idea. In Brad Carrington, American the author uses fantasy to reveal an absurdness of an American way of life, he includes that nonsensical news blocks, he makes the characters act foolishly and speak on silly topics to demonstrate it. The story is all made up and it is hard to believe it could be true itself, but it is important that the reader possesses the ability to read between the lines to catch the actual meaning of it.
Young Goodman Brown is an allegoric story about the people of the puritan New England. The story hinges on Goodman Brown, a young man, who became aware about the existence of both good and evil among people. The dark atmosphere with the common attributes of fantasy genre – dark forests, mysterious stranger with a staff which looked like a snake, altar and the trees burning in the fire – involves the reader into that fantastic world and makes it real. These fantastic figures and events are symbolic, and they assist in conveying the author’s hidden message to the reader. The author never delivers his ideas directly, never puts them in plain words; that is unique and distinguishing about an allegoric writing. The storyline is rather contradictory and unclear; and the author leaves the room for the reader’s own judgment on the events he has read about. The author doesn’t give notions about the reality of the described; the reader has to understand for himself either the devil events of the book took place or they were nothing but a product of the young man’s imagination. The reader percepts it through his own imagination, and if the reader is attentive enough, he takes a lot more from it.
Sonny's Blues is written in realistic manner. The story is about Sonny, a young wandered man with an unclear fate who has been caught in a heroin bust; and it is told on behalf of the narrator – Sonny’s elder brother. This short story has amazingly wide storyline. The author tells us the whole story about the two brothers and reveals their personalities. Along with the narrator the reader passes through the events of the characters’ lives from their childhood and their loss of parents, Sonny’s problems with his personality and getting addicted to heroin; and at the end of it the reader gets to the two brothers’ emotional connecting moment in the club, where Sonny played his wonderful music, which was his way to make something of his sufferings. The author writes about the severe today’s reality and how easily a person may be lost among the other people in it. His realistic writing style draws the reader’s attention to the emotional sides of the events and gives a possibility to understand the characters deeply.
Those three very different writing styles – realistic, allegoric styles and fantasy – authors use to unfold the stories in the various manners. There is no common notion about which stories should be written in one or another. Fantasy activates the reader’s imagination and the whole story develops beyond the book pages. An allegory creates an air of uncertainty, and it says a lot more than the words actually mean. A realistic writing ideally reflects the emotional side of the story, and the reader is to be very attentive to what’s written to understand the author’s idea. It seems like literature is a lot like a huge world itself in which every reader may find a book for him.
