Crime can occur in any place so crime prevention programs are needed in every place. Crime prevention programs help to minimise the rate of crimes. Every crime prevention program is unique and the way they perform and carry out their work is not similar. Some crime prevention programs work with groups and some with individuals. In order to implement a crime prevention program, a person or group should come have a common goal and work together in order to achieve their goal which is prevention of crime. Crime prevention programs also work with students because most of the crime starts at an early age starting from teen pregnancy to substance abuse, etc. These programs provide behaviour management, anger management with confidence and capacity building sessions and workshops. Prevention programs provide counselling to individuals and their families if needed. They find out ways to help the individual and encourage him to do positive things and channelize his anger in a productive way some members of the program should have certain specialised skills to work in any situation. Every program has a leader who has knowledge and experience of working with crime prevention. Each member gets assigned to do a particular job. They follow certain strategies for tackling anti –social behaviour. Some members take turns and do neighbourhood watch. Some of the programs have been successful in their effort to prevent crimes.
The local crime prevention program that I have chosen to discuss in this article is the Youth crime prevention programme. The components of the program include Youth inclusion programs, youth inclusion and support panels and the formation of Youth offending team. It lasts for six months and the participants are the youngsters belonging to the age group of 8 to 17 years. These are the youngsters who are prone to committing crimes and possess anti-social behaviour. They will be trained by a mentor who will be responsible in helping the participants in performing tasks like getting good grades in their educational institution, coping with bullying as well as abuse and helps in developing futuristic point of views about career perspectives. The things that the participants learn in this crime prevention program are varied. These include the learning of new skills like leadership, management and volunteering as a whole, gaining access to local social services and learn about health and safety measures in the society and at school specifically. Guide a group of young students including families to get involved in crime prevention programs similar to the one they will be involved in.
The main aim of this local crime prevention program named Youth crime prevention programme is to prevent the youngsters from committing any crime or even to suppress them from having a criminal or anti-social mind as such. Apart from this, the mentor will also teach the youngsters about how to live a responsible life in the society and how to volunteer other students or adults in such crime prevention programmes. The students do not only learn about the strategies to prevent crime by themselves and the members of a particular society but also several other new skills which would make them responsible citizens. However, the students are not made to do hectic activities like drills for hours or moving from one street to another in the scorching sun to spread awareness.
