The world is a place that sees never-ending change. People migrate to cities in search of better opportunities, giving place for skyscrapers and slums. Extreme appetite for fuel, drastic climate change and never ending population has scared the future of planet Earth. In the early years, dating back to 10000 BC, scientists estimated the world population to be ten million. As empires grew and countries emerged, the population started growing rapidly. By the year 1800, world population was approximately one billion. Within a span of 200 years, the world population has rapidly increased to 7 billion at the present time which is unacceptable. Scientists have proved that the planet cannot support the excess population anymore.
The major population growth is seen in Asian countries. For example, the population of Bangladesh has risen from 50 million to 150 million in the recent years out of which about 15 million people live in the capital city of Bangladesh, Dhaka. The video casts a Bangladeshi family who has just two kids and is very happy. The government has taken great measures to create an awareness of Family Planning among the people. Door to door awareness campaigns of contraceptive measures in the rural areas have been implemented. Bangladesh government has done its best to reduce the fertility rate from 7 babies per woman in 1972 to 2.2 babies per woman at the current situation. With the reduction of fertility rate, Bangladesh has seen an increase in the lifespan of the people from 30 years to 70 years.
The statistics show the world fertility rate as 5 babies per woman in1963, major chunks of population from China, India and Bangladesh. There was an amazing change that took place to reduce the world fertility rate as 2 babies per woman by 2013. Earlier, there was one out of five children who lost their lives before they reached the age of 5. In the fear of losing children, women used to give birth to more and more children. However, in the recent years, measures have been taken to prevent infant deaths. Vaccination, cleanliness and hygiene measures have been followed to save the lives of millions of children. The year 2000 was observed to be peak child as there would be no drastic increase in the population of children anymore.
The demographers of the population division of the United Nations have projected the world’s population to reach 11 billion by the end of the century. It is estimated that Africa would have 4 billion, Asia would have 5 billion and the rest 2 billion would be distributed among American and European continents. Eighty percent of the population is concentrated in Asia and Africa. Asia has a majority of the developing countries; however, the growing population can manage to survive a decent life as the countries are rich enough to provide resources to their population. Even Africa is transforming itself to provide a better life to its population. However, the worst challenge lies in the rural areas. In order to improve the lives of the people, education plays a crucial role. Today, the literacy rate stands at 80 percent in the world.
Out of the 7 billion world population, statistics show that on an average, one billion people can earn about $100 a day and 1.5 billion can earn $1 a day. The rest 4.5 to 5 billion is capable to earn $10 a day. When one looks from a rich man’s perspective, he finds no difference between the middle income group and the low income group as he feels both the groups are equally poor. In 1800, the world income on an average was only $1 per day. Later with the industrial revolution, the number increased slowly. The First World War and the Second World War brought down the economy, but the colonial rule and independence of various countries led to the rise in income. United States and United Kingdom are stable at high income, however, the developing countries are catching up so fast to reach them. When comparing the statistics of 1963 to the present time, in 1963, the major part of the population in the United States and United Kingdom were rich and the Asian countries were the ones below the poverty line. At the present time, except one billion, the rest of the population in Asia is in the middle income group and a very few in the high income group.
The United Nations have set up a new goal to remove the poverty in the African countries in twenty years. The poor would stay in poverty forever if they do not try to improve their living standard. The government should also take measures and provide facilities like schools, hospitals, roads, electricity and basic amenities. High living standard can in turn result in the use of energy resources. Most of the energy resources are obtained by the burning of fossil fuels. The carbon dioxide emission leads to severe climatic changes and results in global warming. In the coming decades, the 2-3 billion population in the high and medium income group consumes more than 85% of the energy.
The population growth is in control and would stay static by the end of the century. Poverty can be eradicated by employing methods to eradicate it. The only challenge is the emission of carbon dioxide by use of energy from fossil fuels. If this issue is controlled, the earth would turn into a wonderful planet.
