It has always been my choice to pursue an engineering-related degree ever since being exposed to solving mathematical and scientific problems. My technical skills were further honed as I was given chance in my school to formulate ideas and design and develop new equipment that will be useful in making life simpler. Since I consider myself as someone good in the field of math, science and even computer sciences, I have chosen to pursue a career in electrical engineering.
An electrical engineer works on solving problems, testing equipment, designing new equipment and developing existing equipment which are related to the field of electricity, electronics and electro-magnetism. Electrical engineers have a large scope of work since they are considered as experts in fields relating to power, signal and telecommunication processing, and control systems. They usually work on how to utilize electricity for transmission of energy and development of large-scale electrical system by employing efficient and economical ways. Electrical engineering has many sub-disciplines where one could choose on what to specialize with or by combining it with other sub-disciplines. These sub-disciplines include electronics, micro-electronics, signal processing, power, control, telecommunications, instrumentation, and computer. Having many sub-disciplines, I think that pursuing a career in electrical engineering will not limit my chances of getting a good job in my chosen field as well as pursuing my dream to work in the United States.
Electrical engineers are often exposed to working with high and low voltage electrical equipment which is used for many purposes, even in other engineering disciplines. They usually work in transportation networks, power generators and distributors, renewable energy agencies, manufacturing, construction, and infrastructure services. Electrical engineering degree holders can work in plants, power stations, research facilities, offices, and factories. They have duties to such as development of feasible studies for new technologies, creating project plans and time scales, working on circuit diagrams with assistance of computer-aided design software’s, cost estimation, testing and installation of electrical systems, regulation of safety in upcoming projects, and maintenance and inspection in power plants.
In order to become an electrical engineer, I must be able to complete and undergraduate degree first in electrical engineering. I can also involve myself in on-job-trainings or apprenticeship in order to get a first-hand experience of what is in store for me once I become a full-fledged engineer. Being an electrical engineer surely looks like a tough job. One must have skills and qualities such as being excellent in physical sciences and engineering science. IT skills are also advantageous in this field. If I want to excel in this field I must also have the ability to interpret technical diagrams, to analyse problems with different levels of complexity, to think of possible solutions to the problems, and to properly explain the ideas. A person planning to pursue electrical engineering jobs must have good organizational skills, communication skills, decision-making skills, and can work with other teams and people.
Given the choices for specialization, I would love to become an expert in power and computer engineering. I think that I can contribute the most to field of electrical engineering by choosing these two sub-disciplines. I have not chosen the profession of being an electrical engineer just for the sake to earn high salary but I wanted to discover and develop ways on how to make electricity sustainable for the future generations. I believe that there are many opportunities for electrical engineers. Since I wanted to work in the US, if I truly excel in this field, I will be given a chance to work in companies such as The Boeing Company, Lockheed Martin Corporation, and IBM corporations.
