Impact of design
Introduction
The design the most important step in the creation process of a new product or solution. The design starts with the determination of the necessities of the market or a problem. The problem with the available resources the conception of a first design starts. The conception is the translation of the problem solution into a technical approach. After the conception process, there is necessary the development of the engineering process in two phases: Basic Engineering Detailed Engineering .
The basic engineering consists in the definition of the design functioning with material composition and dimensions. The basic engineering gives to the designer 80% accuracy in the required resources for the manufacture of the solution. The detailed engineering consists in the development of 100% of dimensions, materials, manufacture process, maintenance, and operation. The detailed engineering generates the drawings, bill of materials and specifications required for the manufacture, distribution, use and disposal of the designed product. In the case of an application or software design, the process is similar with the difference than the basic engineering defines the screens and the functionalities of the application while the detailed engineering consists of the code behind each function.
The design of a tool to manage the study program of an educative institution has important consequences for the institution management and him quality service for the undergraduates and post-graduates of the institution. There are global, economic, environmental and societal impacts of the design. The global impact refers to the use of the design in other parts of the world, the participation of other people around the world to develop the design. The economic impact refers to design costs, materials, and the manufacturing efficiency, for a software development refers to cost developments and future revenues. The environmental impact refers to how the design is friendly to the environment. The societal impact refers to how the design affects the social relations in the market.
The analyzed design the development of a tool to manage the study program of each student (undergraduate and post-graduate) in the Wright State University under the four perspectives analysis.
Global impact
The design of a developing tool for the program of study creation institution has a positive global impact in the Wright State University and all the educational institutions of the world. The design that allows the students to register a semester with the allowed courses is useful for all the educational institutions of the world; the principle could be applied using local infrastructure, compatible programming language and the courses that each institution may offer.
The design requires equipment, like computers, servers, modems, routers, and wiring. Due to the fact, that the university has spaces and equipment, it is not necessary to contract a third party host servers service. The service will be maintained by students and technicians of the University. The internet subdomain will be used in the current domain of the University only increasing the fee payment per year by the creation of a new domain of the application. The required resources are available at the University .
Economic impact
The design has an economic impact in the University reducing the labor costs each semester in the courses registry. Previous semesters, the University needed to contract more than one thousand man-hours to make semester registration by manual and paper means. With an automatized program, the required labor costs will reduce virtually to "zero," because the registration is online and each student have all the information and resources to make the registration by himself. The process has exceptions that are handled by the school advisor. The printing costs are paid by the student in the registry. The costs of the design are calculated considered an ABC cost strategy with the depreciation of the equipment used for the design.
The fluctuation in costs of materials, supplies and services did not affect the design because it uses existing materials, equipment. At the moment to change the equipment by technologic obsolescence, the previous percentages will be considered in the cost of the design.
Environmental impact
The design is not physical; it is an application that does not generate greenhouse emissions to the environment. The design by an indirect way helps to the reduction of waste and greenhouse emission thanks that the application allows the student to make the registry in the semester using his personal computer in a remote way reducing the necessity to move to campus. The use of paper for printing will reduce in more than 95% because the printing requirement is optional. The design recommends the University and the students to create a digital print of the transaction, for record purposes using XPS, PDF or JPG generators where the University and the student may save a record of all the transactions .
Societal impact
The design has an important effect on the university campus. Previously, the registration was a stressful week for the University, with the application design, the process is online, could be extended for more than a week and the University could plan better the required teachers according to the demand of courses by the students.
The physical rows are changed by virtual queues. The students can receive in less than one day an email confirmation of the success of the courses registry.
The design may be combined with social networking improving the experience of the registry application with existent social networks. The design may take the Application Programming Interface (API) of the current social networks to adapt it to the necessities of the design and the user requirement .
Conclusion
The design is the most important process in the creation or revamping of a product. The design process starts with the problem definition, conceptual engineering, and basic engineering a detailed engineering. The design establishes the functions, dimensions, materials and manufacture procedure. According to the design, the product will have an impact on global issues, economy, environment, and society.
The global impact is because the design is possible to adapt it to all the universities and educational institutions of the world using the existing hardware and software resources. The programming and language resources may vary from one institution to another. The economic impact is by the man-hour required in the courses registration process each year. The University will save more than one thousand man-hours for each registration process and the leased equipment. The environmental impact is the "almost" elimination of printing requirements in each registration in more than 95% and the use of "digital printing" for record purposes. The social impact is the simplification of the University process and the elimination of a stressful process each month by the students and the University authorities.
