The article: “Turmeric: A Root Treatment for Asthma” is an interesting paper discussing the benefits of turmeric (curcuma longa) in the treatment of Asthma. Apart from asthma, a number of research studies, across the world, have reported the benefits of turmeric for other chronic disease like cancer. It has been suggested as an ideal plant product to prevent diseases. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial function. Though research has found curcumin (a product obtained from turmeric) to be useful, its action in-vivo is not as potent as western medicine. Western medicines bring quick relief, though they may have side effects. Though curcumin does not have side effects, its action is slow and may not be suitable for immediate relief. Further, its preventive role in asthma, has to be validated through extensive research.
Though the paper suggests a very potent anti-inflammatory role of curcumin, there is no literature support to back the efficacy of curcumin or other turmeric products, over western medicines used for the disease. Nevertheless, as suggested by the paper, turmeric can be an important add on therapy and a natural way of keeping away the disease. The idea of taking black pepper along with turmeric appears to be useful in asthma. Black pepper does have beneficial effects on the respiratory tract. Though curcumin is nontoxic, high doses are required for activity. It is doubtful whether such high doses can be achieved intranasal, like other inhalation medicines. In addition, curcumin is highly insoluble, and it will be beneficial to find ways to increase its solubility. Though black pepper may increase the solubility of turmeric, it is only suitable for oral intake and may prove disastrous if taken nasally. Further, it will be beneficial to know, if curcumin or turmeric is effective on all asthma or only on certain types? Turmeric’s effect on the immune system may be symptomatic and I am also curious if consumption of high dose of curcumin can cause immunosuppression.
