Indeed, feminism is not a set of commandments, but a critic of culture. Over the years, gender inequality has been a dominant practice especially in the majority of male chauvinistic societies. However, with the advent of the feminist movements, the womenfolk are now getting liberated because it has shifted the focus from the males to the females. In fact, the females who have been in the yoke of oppressions are now getting a relief and claiming a high degree of equality.
Having successfully utilized my time during this course, I would like to say that it has transformed me to be a more informed student. Initially, I did not show much concern about the welfare of women in my community. I had always known that they are naturally inferior and should be downtrodden. However, with the numerous discussion forums, weekly lesson frameworks and projects, I was able to know the truth and realized that gender biasness is unjustified and should not be condoned. It has caused a lot of havoc to the women in many ways. A part from causing a psychological torture, it has robbed them by denying them the opportunities they rightfully deserve.
I was particularly impressed by the discussions we had about gender inequality in the work place. It offered me an ample opportunity to learn about how the female employees have suffered in the hands of their male chauvinistic colleagues and bosses. Many employers have taken advantage of their positions to discriminate against their female employees. Unlike their male counterparts, the females find it so challenging to acquire jobs. In case they do, their problems do not end there. Instead of giving them an equal treatment, they are not. Instead, it is the male employees who are favored. For instance, in case of promotion or salary increment, they are given the second priority. This is a very unfortunate experience which has demoralized these female workers.
The other important thing about this course is that it introduced us to a series of resourceful publications about gender issues. The most important of all was the Country Girl: A Memoir by Edna O'Brien. In this book, Edna gave an insightful story of Mary, a young British lady who silently suffers under the brutal acts of his inhumane father. However, the most surprising thing is that no one else expected to help her. The societal institutional structures dictate that no one should intervene in such cases. Thus, even the neighbors, teachers or priests are not entitled to intervene. The same torturous experiences are encountered in Betty Friedan Anna Quindlen’s Praise for Country Girl and Edna O’Brien’s The Feminine Mystique.
In conclusion, I would like to point out that this course really enlightened me. It opened my mind and enabled me to understand more about the plights of the females. The domination of the males has not only been limited to the homes, but extended to the work place and other places in which the women are not expected to be felt. It is of great importance to me because it can help me in my future career development. It has inspired me to join the feminist movements to advocate for the abolition of workplace discrimination and introduction of gender equality in the whole society. This is an emotive issue and should be fiercely fought by everyone including myself.
