The contemporary forest management recruits various forestry professionals who are majorly involved in forest operations and administration. Those who are interested in forestry management position are required to equip themselves necessary education and experience that can help in making sound decisions and formulation of forestry policies. At the same time, they must be able to use the modern technologies that help in effective and efficient forest management. Forestry manager, therefore, must have the essential knowledge, skills, and experience to succeed in the position. A focus on the description of forestry management position by specifically looking at the task and the requirements that are considered when hiring a forestry manager and how to select the best candidate for the post is crucial.
Job Description
A forestry manager oversees a spectrum of different types of activities and projects in the capacity of forestry management. A forestry manager will be responsible for the supervision of other forestry employees, directing the production of heavy equipment, measuring and evaluating data (Pacific Forest Foundation, 2014). The manager will also actively take part in decision-making and problem-solving in the activities taking place in the forest. Specifically, a forestry manager develops and implements plans for forestation. Also, the holder will create and deliver public education and awareness regarding forestry issues. Besides, a forestry manager will be responsible for the overall operation of the forests from planting to harvesting, including the sales of the logs. Forestry managers will plan the daily activities to meet the target set for the production, safety and environmental protection.
For one to be a forestry manager, the candidate will be required to have at least a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Forestry or Botany. Candidates with a degree in Forestry tend to be preferred to those who pursued Botany (Pacific Forest Foundation, 2014). Nevertheless, people from other disciplines such as chemistry, geology, and general biology can also be employed in the position of a forestry manager. Apart from educational qualification, a forestry manager must be interested in all aspects of nature and must have a concern for the wellbeing of the natural environment. At the same time, the person must have sound organizational and communication skills to effectively work with other forestry professionals and to oversee multiple projects.
There is also the specific knowledge that a forestry manager should have to succeed in the position. First, a forestry manager should have knowledge of the science of forestry such as forest products and species identification. The person should also have experience principles and practices of forestry management, conservation, and reforestation (Pacific Forest Foundation, 2014). Also, the person should be able to survey, map, and estimate forest land. Regarding capability, forestry manager should be in a position to perform technical forestry studies and to adequately prepare and maintain forestry records. Finally, the person should be able to assess the results of forestry resource techniques.
Regarding technology, the applicants for the position are also required to have computer skills. The candidate should have enough knowledge on Geographical Information System (GIS) to facilitate easy access and manage data that is used in decision-making (Pradhan, 2009). Also, forestry manager should be able to use tools like photogrammetry and remote sensing devices. Besides having a degree in forestry or Botany, a forestry manager should also have sound knowledge in information technology, especially in computer systems.
Advertising and Recruitment
I would use advertising and web recruitment due to their numerous advantages. The job advertisement will majorly appear in print media such as newspapers and magazines. Advertising the vacant position in print media gives an organization a chance to connect the right applicant, especially the adults who are likely to fill the position. Print media also makes the advertisement more legitimate because many people trust the information contained in the print media than those in the digital media. Web recruitment also enables the organization to reach a large number of potential employees. Therefore, advertisement and web recruitment, which are also part of the external recruitment, has the potential of attracting the right candidates who can bring fresh ideas and diverse experience to the organization.
Conclusion
A forestry manager must be a skilled and a knowledgeable person who is attracted to nature and is ready to protect the environment. Vast pools of candidates are considered from multiple fields not necessarily holders of bachelors in forestry as mentioned above. Successful candidates must also have knowledge in information technology. Organizations seeking to employ forestry manager should use external recruitment methods to acquire the best candidate for the position. While undertaking the recruitment procedure of a forestry manager, upholding the position description by looking at the task and the requirements to be considered is critical in the quest for determining and selecting the best candidate for the post.
